...I threw away the previous 1,812 words of the Title-Free Wonder. Wrong characters, wrong set-up, just -- wrong. Upped the stakes and started again. This feels much stronger, so I may have, please ghod, figured out the right road in. I should mention, in case anyone is possibly interested, that this particular story is atypical because I know the ending. The problem of crafting a beginning that would logically lead to that ending has been ...more challenging than I supposed.

So, once more into the breach...
