...and it's dark outside already.

Not that it was a stand-out day for sunshine, but still.

As of Right Now, all the pre-ordered copies of the Liaden Universe(R) Companion, Volume One have been mailed, and should be hitting their various target addresses in the US by the end of this week. Out of US orders may take a bit longer.

On my way into town this morning, noticed that the Sebasticook and the Kennebec were high, and wide, and running hard. I stopped at Joka's on my way to gym, to find Carol up to her elbows with the wiring of the front register.

"Problem?" I asked.

"Oh, we had a leak in the roof this weekend and of course it dripped right on this machine! I'm trying to --"

"Um, should you be doing that? I mean, wet wires -- you could get a really bad shock."

"Well, I've got to do something!"

"Call the repairman, why not?"

"I guess I could do that..."

Onward to gym, where one of the staff brought in a really nice spider to hang in the so-called Harvest Window. (Over the last couple years, under pressure, so I hear, from those who profess to believe that the day is about "devil worship" Waterville has stopped using the word "Ha***ween" and instead has Harvest activities. Downtown businesses sponsor Harvest Windows for the local kids to paint. And there's a Harvest Party. This amuses me greatly, in a one-step-forward-two-steps-backward sort of way. But I digress.)

So, in comes the spider -- two feet across if she was an inch, made out of some kind of Giant Sized hairy black pipe cleaners. Big red eyes. Extremely handsome. Five of the women present immediately went into Ick Mode. I grinned and held out my arms, and Patty let me hold the spider. Really well done, missing only one thing to make it perfect. It should have been a pinata -- for the Harvest Party.

Think maybe next year you could get them to change it to Samhain? That would make it perfect.

*You* explain the pronounciation, right?

"Sam Hein." This is, after all, Central Maine, where one can say "Lugnut" in a group of pagans and be instantly understood.

Unfortunately, I do not live in Waterville and have no influence on City Policy. Even more unfortunate is the fact that I don't have any influence over the "my-child's-eternal-soul-is-being-threatened-by-the-school-Halloween-party" crew. Or maybe not. Work for a lifetime, there...
