For those who are breathlessly awaiting the next installment in the Trip/Con Report, fear not! More is on the way, RSN. In the meantime, rejoice in knowing that the page proofs for the Ace edition of Balance of Trade are all but completed; that [livejournal.com profile] kinzel's annual visit to the vampires was accomplished with no more bloodshed that was strictly necessary, and that the Amazon.com blog is, after much more back-and-forthing than was perhaps Absolutely Necessary, is now on-line. Also? This month, Sword of Orion debuts on the Locus Bestseller List, tradepaper division, nestled cozily between Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Wicked. Hard to get much more cognitive dissonance without the application of Serious Explosives.

And, from time to time, my stepmother sends me various odds 'n ends she's discovered around the house and which she thinks I might like to have. How she's still discovering these things after four moves, I have no idea -- but I digress. The mail yesterday brought a picture of my maternal grandfather as a lad. It's in pretty bad shape; some kid who shall remain nameless having carefully written CAT, MAT, RAT, SAT, BAT all over the back in heavy-handed pencil at some point in the last forty or so years. It's also torn, alas, and not looking like it'll be with us much longer. So I

Right. He was a graduate of McDonogh School, which was a kinda, sorta military school. Students worked on the school farm to pay for their board and lessons, and drilled in companies. Blackie was first lieutenant of Company A.
