WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI secretly sought information last year on 3,501 U.S. citizens and legal residents from their banks and credit card, telephone and Internet companies without a court's approval, the Justice Department said Friday.

I wish I could say that I am surprised. The minute people start saying that political dissent is unpatriotic and subversive is the minute you start losing your civil rights. What's particularly disturbing about this is that this story gets a brief moment of sunlight every few months and then no one does anything about it. and the press just stops talking about it for another 6 months. Such is the power of a dictatorship.

The saddest part of this to me, is that in our zeal to protect ourselves and our freedom from terrorism, we have given our freedom away. They won, and we did it to ourselves. Don't get me wrong, I don't want there to ever be another 9/11. But I am not willing to live in a police state to ensure that. Nor do I think we need to. Canada is starting to look very good, despite the cold.

I completely agree with you. I just had a friend move to New Zealand, and I'm thinking that I'd love to follow him. Our government right now scares me silly.
