The House on Friday evening overwhelmingly passed, 412-6, a homeland security spending bill containing $1.2 billion to begin construction of fences and other barriers along the U.S.-Mexican border, plus money for jails to detain illegal immigrants and hire 1,500 more border agents. The Senate cleared the bill late Friday by voice vote.

Anybody have any ideas about what this will do to the migrations of the Blameless Creatures of the Earth God-the-Grandfather-in-the-Sky supposedly gave into the care of Men? You'd think that at least some of the wingnuts folks who are so interested in bringing GtGitS "back" to the center of gummint would think of such things.

Many of them are quite possibly convinced the Rapture will come and they'll be taken away.

I wonder if anyone's written a story in which the Rapture occurs and they're the ones who get left behind?

This sort of thing makes me want to make everyone in Washington live in a border town for ten years, so that they can understand just how thin-to-non-existent that line between us and them really is.

And also how hamrful this is to communities where us and them live together. I mean, that border fence is going to cut through towns; it's going to keep members of families apart.

And it won't work. They'll find other ways and places to get in. And the good Republican political donors will keep right on hiring those who do get in.

Did you read the Tony Hillerman book where the whole situation is manufactured by power brokers in DC in order to make them richer? Sounds improbable, but under this regime, you honestly never know. So far they've been consistent in fulfilling the more dire prophecies about what they'll do next.

I think, Sharon, those Wingnuts visualize their Great WHITE father in Heaven as looking more like Uncle Sam than the pictures in your Sunday School books. Hence, (He, She, It) isn't worried about critters who are native born 'Mericans.

This raises an interesting question -- I'm not aware of any exemptions written into the Homeland Security Act that would give DHS a waiver on filing an Environmental Impact Statement for this project. (Heck, they forgot to give themselves a Freedom of Information Act exemption, which was probably a much higher priority for their agenda.)

Anyone know the facts on that?

Obviously, those alien creatures should have their employers fill out the proper paperwork to allow them to become legal guest workers. Those folks aren't interested in the well-being of our native critters. Whyever would you think they might be interested in the care of critters intent on illegal immigration?

Of course, any fence meant to keep people out can also be used to keep people in. Remember Fortress? Couple this bill with the torture bill and us 'Mericans may be in serious doodoo.
