What is it about a woman reading a book in a lunchroom that makes people believe she's in need of company and conversation?

I was reading the _Best of Myles_, too; giggling my head off (in a ladylike, refined manner suitable to my station, of course) and having a Grand Time with the essay concerning the whys and wherefores of performing _The Portrait of Dorian Gray_ as a play, which is just Wonderful writer humor...

It's gotta be the full moon... that happened to me today in a (bloody) MacDonald's! Happily eating my salad, giggling at the latest version of Patricia Wrede's Magic cum Regency novel... and a guy about 20 years younger than me sits and tries to start conversation....

Or simply a person, anywhere, reading anything? Very frustrating to have a book open, enjoying yourself and folks have to choose that time to come up and talk your ear off.

The only reason you could possibly be reading a book is that you were so desperately bored that you couldn't find anything else to do. The person(s) who interrupted you were just saving you from a desperate fate.

Isn't it odd

Isn't it odd, how so many people believe that their company MUST be preferable to a good book?

Because most people assume that if you're reading a book, it must be because you've nothing better to do. (I grew up in a mixed household on this one. My mother is firmly in favor of occasional "reading suppers," while my father Does Not Get It.)
