It depends. It would make you blog easier to find for new fans. I like rolanni though.

I recall having to ask, when you said you had LJ.

Count me amount the 'dunnos'. Rolanni is connected to your books, so fans may be able to track it down. I like the sound.

My old moniker, kaygo, was nice and short, but didn't mean anything. I changed to my name so that folks would have an easier time finding me.

Not much help, I know...

Your LJ is public, yes? You discuss your writing in it, yes? If you want it to contribute in any way to your professional career, then I'd say changing the name on it is a no-brainer.

(I have a separate professional blog; [livejournal.com profile] autopope was originally anonymous, and it's still f-locked because I discuss things on it that aren't for general public consumption. I feel no need to change it to, say, cstross because it's not my public face. So there's your counter-example.)

Or you could grab "sharonlee" and put a note on it saying that your real LJ is here.

I have done that with [livejournal.com profile] jowalton.

rolanni? sharonlee?

I like Rolanni, but, if you have a good reason to change it, I guess that's your call. I would leave well enough alone it were me. I think most people find sites by clicking links (that's how I first got here) or Googling these days. If Googling "Sharon Lee" doesn't get the inquisitive new fan here in about 3 clicks or less, I don't think they're trying very hard. I suppose that if I had a LJ account, this would be a "No" vote.

Anyway, I presume that if you have time to conduct polls, that means that the next chapter of Fledgling is just about wrapped up? A big long chapter, with lots to keep us on the edges of our seats I hope.

Erik,

Now, there's an interesting take on the creative process...

I assume from the above comment that the next chapter is still in works and will be finished at 11:50 am tomorrow and started sometime well after the creation of the poll.

You wrong me. The chapter was more than half done before I posted the poll (which took a total of four seconds, max), and is now completely finished. I'll look it over again tomorrow, but I don't think there's anything substantive that needs to be added.

I am sorry. Too much time spent among future presidents of Procrastinators of the World is my only explanation.

Please, forgive any slight I have inadvertently made to your, obviously successful, process. There was none intended. This all reminds me though, I have wanted to ask sometimes, if the Fledgling exercise doesn't remind you of school? (Is your homework done?) I recall (while completing the art degree) things along the lines of, “For Monday's critique, create negative space.” (that was a real assignment). The potential for poor marks from the Professor was nothing compared to the potential scorn of your fellow students, usually quite plainly expressed, should your efforts be less than expected. I try not to dwell on what that the stress of deadlines sometimes did to my “creative process”. Needless to say, you seem to have no such trouble with deadlines.

More to the point of your post, are there any really definable negatives to leaving things alone. If there is no improvement, or negative consequences, (if/when you do change) how easy is it to change back? Would that cause even more confusion than you think there might already be?
One more thing, something which we probably should have been asked in art classes I think, but weren't, “Who is your intended audience?”.

Erik,

What do you want to use it for? If you want people to find it as Sharon Lee, then changing the name makes sense. On the other hand, as a hangout for your id/ego/whatever, rolanni seems like a perfectly good name.

Keeping two, one for public and one for private, may be more complicated than you want to go. I will note that the profile seems to offer a "display name" which might be separate from the LJ name? So you might have an LJ at http://sharonlee.livejournal.com that still has the display name of rolanni? Not that I've tried that, but it does seem possible.

Frankly, I suspect changing it at this point would be likely to confuse those of us who have gotten used to rolanni - and it does seem as if those who are hunting for Sharon Lee are likely to find . . . okay, I did a quick check. Google just "Sharon Lee" and there's the SRM page, your clothing goods store in England, and the LJ at the bottom of the page. Google "Sharon Lee LJ" and there you are again. So I'm not quite sure I understand how changing the pointer would improve access?

Whichever. Don't worry, we'll probably still find you :-)

....as long as it isn't a lyme tick that is....

The nice thing is that the name change will carry over to everyone that already has you friended. Another friend did this recently and it came through automatically on my list.

So either works for me :)

Hi Sharon,

I vote to keep Rolanni, though if Joy were an option it would be hard to resist. You are almost the only person I know who has used the same moniker as long as we've been corresponding (since '94, I do believe), just as I suspect I'm the only one who has had the same email address all that time.

Cheers, Jack

I'll say no, just because you've been rolanni for so long. I found you without any problem by following the link from the liad web site. As long as people can find you, it should be okay.

'Course, I'm one of those people that can rant for an hour when some company buys a sports park and changes the name. I'm going to call Candlestick Park "Candlestick Park" until I die. The Oakland Colesium is going to be "Oakland Colesium" forever. I don't care what name they stick up there.

I have two -- kalimeg is for personal notes, real life things, cooking, memories, and griping; tinablack is for SF book reviews, talking about conventions, and other SF related materials.

It might be good to have sharonlee as an infodump place, and as a place for other business matters.

My inclination is to "no"; you have not only professional stuff, but personal, home, cats, work, etc. I'd be tempted to leave [livejournal.com profile] rolanni for the everything-blog, and if you want a "professional" blog, go ahead and plant a flag on [livejournal.com profile] sharonlee if it's available. (e.g. [livejournal.com profile] matociquala vs [livejournal.com profile] elizabethbear; [livejournal.com profile] tammy212 vs [livejournal.com profile] tammypierce)

I pondered a similar thing recently, and was told that enough people know me as "suri" that changing it would be pointless clicking on my part. Also, as was said upstream, my LJ is far more than just my writing stuff. I have my blogspot for people who only want the Retrievers updates.

I did add my full name to my identifier/profile, tho, so it comes up in searches.

I like rolanni and it has a special meaning to you (and to those of us who are readers). I do agree that there is sometimes a point to having a "professional" blog and a "personal" blog. Since I have only a personal life and no professional life to speak of (I guess that beats having a professional life and no personal life), I only need one, and am therefore not truly qualified to vote on the 1 or 2 blog question. Do what you want!

Who remembers their statistics?

I think it's probably significant that right now, with 60 votes in, only about 1/3 voted either yes or no. And the winner appears to be ticky box, with almost 50% of the vote!

Does that mean you'll be changing the blog name to HangingChad?

Lurker here...

In your situation, I'd actually set up sharonlee with a single post that redirects people to your rolanni LJ. I can't see too many people having found the sharonlee LJ not clicking on a link to take them to the rolanni LJ.

Part of the appeal (to me at least) if that your LJ has both profession related updates and personal amusing posts on it. This is a BLOG and I'd expect to see pretty much the kind of posts that you already make here (without you losing your privacy).

Umm, that's not supposed to sound stalkerish - sorry.

Hope this helps...

Is there a box for "Why?" I'd suggest starting a new LJ under it, with pointers here for life and times of -- post only specific writing stuff in both, everything else here.

But I am often a member of "If it's working, why screw with it?"
