rolanniSRM Publisher is proud to announce the title of the 2007 Yule Chapbook. That would be Dragon Tide. The chapbook will contain two original short stories, "Daughter of Dragons," contiguous with the Agent of Change sequence. The other story, which is still awaiting a title, is set within the Crystal timeline.
Pre-orders are now open! Simply go to the Dragon Tide pre-order page. While you're there, you might want to check out the other SRM offerings. It's never too early to buy Yule presents.
For those who have iron control and have not be over to the Fledgling site since Chapter 31 was posted, on October 8 -- the authors have declared a draft. Yes, we do know that there are things that need to be fixed, threads left dangling, and subplots that are unresolved. We'll deal with it. However, second drafts are not for the squeamish, so we will be performing the necessary surgery and repair in private. The current projection is for a trade paperback of the finished novel to be mailed to qualifying subscribers next autumn.
In the meantime -- yes, we do plan to finish the story out. Watch for an announcement of a new serialized novel continuing the Life and Times of Theo Waitley, early next year.
Other writing news...Sometime this week, the mailman brought us three copies of the Russian edition of Balance of Trade, which was pleasant. The accompanying note explaining how we weren't going to be getting our on-pub money wasn't so pleasant, but -- hey! Russian edition = 'way cool.
I note that Fictionwise now has available nine out of a possible ten Sharon Lee titles. Download, read, enjoy! Heck, vote, if the mood is on you.
The rest of the weekend involves finishing up the last pass through Duainfey, after which it will be zapped over to the good folks at Baen, leaving me free! to begin writing Longeye.
Speaking of Baen: candles, prayers, and good thoughts, please, for Hank Reinhardt, Toni Weisskopf's husband, who is in the hospital and doing very poorly.

Oh, more of the fallout from Meisha Merlin's demise. The Russian rights were sold by MM, through its agent. In the Normal Course of Things, the money from Russia would arrive in the hands of the agent, who would send a check to Meisha Merlin, who would divide by two and send our half on to us.
But.
The note that came with the books says that the final Russian advance via Meisha Merlin was levied by the IRS due to unpaid payroll tax.
The IRS considers any money contractually due to Meisha Merlin to be Meisha Merlin's income, and any payments that Meisha Merlin might be contractually obligated to make out of that income have to wait on the IRS Getting Theirs First. Which has long been the Way of the IRS. And, honestly, you really ought to pay your taxes...
That's Bad.

It was kind of a shock to us, too. But there is no stain on the honor of our Russian publisher, who has done everything required by the contract.

Date: 2007-10-20 12:10 pm (UTC)I may have mentioned it before. The current contract with Baen is for two fantasy novels, Duainfey and a sequel which had no title at the time of signing. That sequel is now title Longeye (bearing in mind that titles sometimes do change by publisher's request).

Date: 2007-10-22 10:56 pm (UTC)As one of the people who's paid $25, I'm rather disappointed with this decision. What you have posted so far is the first part of a story. It is not a (even remotely complete) story. There are no conclusions, nothing has been wrapped up, you have not reached any even intermediate resting points. All you've done is built up a lot of threads that need to be dealt with. As an absolute minimum you would need to tell us what they discovered, and how that starts to affect Kamlee's position to have the end of a book.
Your current stopping point is worse tha Ringo's at the end of "When the Devil Dances", and you don't have the excuse of 9/11, or a fixed publishing schedule, to fall back on.
Right now I'm very disappointed that I sent in $25 to support this endeavor. Because I sent it in to get a story, not half of one.

Date: 2007-10-23 04:47 am (UTC)Second, I guess I don't understand the objection to the authors saying that this is where the draft ends, and now the revision process will go forth, and by-and-by there will be a book. Heck, I feel I have been privileged to watch the first rough sketch, and don't really feel it will add much to see the next cut-and-fill session. I know I'd have trouble doing a step-by-step narration of my revision process, and it would be excruciatingly ugly to read.
Now, the point that there is more plot here than fits in one book - I could have sworn that was what the authors said? And that we should check for how that is going to get handled? Heck, that's good news!

So far, this work has consisted of almost nothing but the creation of plot threads. In a multi-book series, you clearly want to create some threads that won't be resolved until later books. But you have to resolve at least some of them in each book.
What's been resolved in the first 31 chapters?
My answer: nothing. What's yours?
What was going to be resolved in a couple more chapters?
Was the data fraudulent? Who is behind it? Why did what's-her-name take off with her boy-toy / pilot? What's Jen-Sar been up to?
Rather than resolve any of those issues, the authors said "just kidding. Now that we've got you hooked we're going to stop putting anything on line, and give you no idea when you might actually find out any of these things."
My point is: we still don't have a story. They haven't delivered even a rough draft. They've delivered part of the rough draft. If the final book stops where this draft does, then that book will be the first Lee and Miller book I know of that I don't, and won't, buy.
I feel no special need to watch them edit the book. I do desire to see how the various plot points that they decide to wrap up in this book get wrapped up. See the difference?
