Feeling Low...
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004 01:03 pmHot and slow and unfocused. It didn't help matters to have my father call and ask me to Speak to my younger sister. Which I did, with about as much success as I could have predicted. For what it's worth, I think my dad's overreacting (I'll avoid repeating my sister's take on this), and what on earth he thought I could've done even if the situation was as he feared is slightly more than I can fathom. My sister's forty-six years old, fercryinoutloud, and it's not as if pig-headedness doesn't run in the family...
Well.
The Enormous Pile of Filing has been put away; I think all of the email that built up during our sorjourn in the south has been answered. Accomplishments of their kind. Still need to contact the panelists for the two WorldCon panels I'm moderating.
At Ms. Asher's request, we've written a personal note which will run in the November SFBC catalog, along with the offering for Balance of Trade; and have likewise written sell copy for Crystal Soldier at Meisha Merlin's request.
The tasks that attend this day are producing an afterword for Crystal Soldier and hopefully narrowing the field of titles for the book we're currently calling CSToo, so it can be advertised by name. This is more difficult than it sounds, since we usually depend on the characters to say something clever while we're writing the book, from which cleverness we derive the title. In the meantime, we call the book either by the names of the lead characters, or by a pet name. Agent of Change, for instance, was called Val Con and Miri on Mars right up to the point of rolling the clean sheet for the final draft into the typewriter, and I hate to tell you how long Local Custom went by Studmuffins of the Sex Star. So, a challenge.
Editorial changes for Crystal Soldier are promised today, which means I'll be able to get with the revisions, be still my heart...

Date: 2004-08-03 05:48 pm (UTC)(The spell checker thinks this should be "Stud muffins." I don't know...when you're breathlessly reporting a sighting of a stud muffin, "ssstudmmuffffins" sounds right to me....)
On a more serious note, I tend to either know thematically what I think the title will be right from the beginning--or I haven't a clue, and it takes until the end of the book to know.
Oddly enough, I can't see a difference in **my** titles at the end. But the publisher changed the two "last minute" titles and left the three "I know what this book is" titles alone.
