Mozart is looking for a Place. The Ideal Place, as I may have mentioned once or twice before, is the big blue chair in the living room. However, Rolanni, who is, despite her many fine qualities, numb'r'n a hake, refused to quit her silly desk chair in front of the silly desk and when he jumped into her lap, she wouldn't let him have the space bar. No, not the mouse either, and she kept moving her hand so it wasn't at all restful to put his chin on her wrist.

Pfui. So then he climbed behind the keyboard, between Rolanni and the screen and when she told him, "Move!" he mooched over to the other side of the desk, and did not push all the papers onto the floor because he is a Maine Coon Cat and Grace is his middle name, and skoooooooched between the Windows box and the Linux box, despite Rolanni repeatedly telling him "No!" and found the Place behind. Except it was all full of wires, with not even a teensy corner for a Maine Coon Cat -- whose other middle names are Lithe and Tiny -- to curl up.

It's very hard, and all Rolanni will say is, "You've got dust in your tail." and "I'm not done."

...except now I am done. For the evening, anyway. Not many words, but a lot of conceptual stuff thought out and duly notated. The sort of stuff that Actually is work but doesn't feel like it because it's not words-inna-row. I'm feeling somewhat better having worked out some of how we're going to get from Here to There. And no, I don't work all this out in detail ahead of time. I could do it, mind you, but I'd wind up throwing it all away or subverting it anyway, so it's just a waste of time.

Not much sleep last night, what with one thing and another. Must remedy that tonight. Especially since I have an early training session at the day-job tomorrow and Mel has been known to lob white-board erasers at the back row on occasion.

Getting the mental scaffolding in place . . . sometimes it seems to take forever, and there's that deadline getting bigger and bigger, and you just wish you could start chunking away at the real work, nobody else is going to see this anyway, right?

But, y'a know, if you don't get that scaffolding set up, you're going to fall! And then it's harder than ever to get back up and start working again.

So the really good ones (who, us?) take the time to get set first, then start spreading the spackle (what, you thought this metaphor was going somewhere? nah, just painting walls).

A little bite every day makes the elephant disappear?

Tantras and I have reached an arrangement: his copilot's chair has a heating pad on it, with a wool blanket on top of that. He thinks that is the acme of comfort, and thus doesn't lie in front of my keyboard anymore.

Spooky (who in NO WAY resembles a singularity, as singularites are massive, black, and have two modes, resting and feeding) likes to squish between me and the laptop. He will then either rest his chin on the back of my hand, or on top of the touchpad and promptly go to sleep (http://pics.livejournal.com/windrose/pic/0006xthd).

Pandora insists on sitting in my lap, with her paw and chin resting on the laptop. This requires me to defur the keyboard every week or so, but so long as the Duchess is happy..

and I'm in the process of world-structuring right now, totally new project, and yeah, when you don't have a word count it's tough to say "oh, I accomplished this much" even though you busted your backside. v. frustrating.

Thanks for the website. The related webpage is good for a bad-mood dispersing chuckle as well.
