I. So far this week, we (or I, or Steve) have:

1. Filled out, photocopied and conveyed the refinance paperwork to the bank.
2. Had several phone calls with the loan officer, and the appraiser.
3. Exchanged several emails with Madame the Agent.
4. Received from the loan officer Even More Paperwork® to fill out.
5. Received from Madame the Agent the contracts referenced in I(3) above.
6. Gone to the day-job Every Single Day and done Actual Day-job Bidness. Go, me. I wanna gold star.
7. Continued SRM Publisher bidness-as-usual.
8. Attended a Library Trustees Meeting.
9. Wept, railed and swore that this book could not be written.
10. Finished picking out the seams, from which seven Good Chapters and True have been salvaged.
11. Written a chapter of Saltation.
12. Gotten Argent the Subaru inspected.


II. So far this week, we (or I, or Steve)have not:

1. Quit the day-job. Go, me. I wanna gold star.
2. Achieved Lasting Fame and Fortune.
3. Answered the several dozen emails in my inbox, wondering if Fledgling and/or Saltation has been reserved in my correspondent's name.
(PSA: This will go faster, guys, if, while you're waiting (and you will have to wait: we're in The Book On Deadline Comes Before Coffee Itself Mode), you scope out your PayPal receipts and/or your checkbook. I'm not being mean, but I am being realistic. And testy. OhMyYes, definitely testy.)
4. Read or filled out the second round of paperwork from the bank.
5. Signed the contracts referenced in I(3) above.
6. Purchased Binjali the Altima a new muffler, new brakes, new headlights OR new shock absorbers.
6. Gotten anywhere near enough sleep.

The assumption that authors SHOULD answer each individual e-mail personally is a shocking waste of author time. I feel lucky and blessed that Rolanni and Kinzel post notes for us to read on a frequent basis...

But I read Heinlein's Grumbles from the Grave in my early years as a SF reader. Worth reading the chapter on fan mail if you can get your hands on a copy.

Alas, we've had a lot of egocentric generations. I must admit that while I've read a lot of Heinlein over the mumblemumble years since my mother first put an Asimov book into my tender hands (why yes, she did have to have One of Those Talks with the main public libraries about my checking out SF books from the adult section when I was 11!), I haven't yet read that one. At the moment I'm rereading the Honor Harrington series for the umpteenth time whilst waiting for the next chapter of Saltation and another Kris Longknife to arrive. And people wonder why I don't trade books in to used book stores. ::snort:: The only way to tell if a book/author is any good is by how many times you want to reread them. As I've always said, the Liadian series are at least a 10... as in reread 10 times without getting stale.

Grumbles from the Grave isn't fiction, it's exactly what the title says - commentary & rambling thoughts, etc. published after his death. I only read it once - it's memorable, but not something to come back to and reread...

Yes, I know. When I said that I'd read a lot of Heinlein, I meant writing by Heinlein. He wrote three non-fiction books during his life as well as articles on various subjects. Issac Asimov also wrote nonfiction as well. This is not uncommon among the early SF writers who tended to be be scientists first and writers second. If you haven't yet read In Memory Yet Green and In Joy Still Felt (the autobiography of Issac Asimov from 1920-1954 and 9154-1978 respectively) I highly recommend them. As well as being a glimpse into the mind of an intelligent, egotistical author (take it from him!), they provide an insight into the beginning and growth of the SF industry in America. But lets give this lj back to the owner, shall we??
