Remember Me

From [livejournal.com profile] matociquala

"If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory ofyou and me. It can be anything you want -- good or bad. When you'refinished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you."

The Nebula awards banquet in Kansas City. You'd just won the election for SFWA president and presided over the meeting so graciously. Everyone in the room breathed a sigh of relief that we knew you'd conduct a civilized meeting and keep the BOD on track in a professional meeting...something missing from SFWA previously.

Thank you for that year of civilization.

I first met you when I picked up a volume entitled "Partners in Necessity". It was then that you invited me to get comfortable and relax and you and Steve proceeded to tell me three tales of love, romance, honor, obligation, duty, respect, and Balance. I have treasured these tales, and tried to share them with others. So much so that that same volume is out on loan right now, trying to share that sense of adventure with others. I doubt you remember me. You've told your stories to so many. But I will always remember you and Steve.

I completely blank on which con where, but I recall a thoroughly enjoyable breakfast with you and your esteemed spouse over which much that was interesting and entertaining was said. I ran across you guys far too few times after that...

I've been a reader of Liaden books for a longish while, but I felt as though I got to know you as more than just a favorite author through this journal. And I still feel gratitude that you allow ordinary fans to share space in your head and your heart.

I remember when you and Steve Miller were on my podcast and related the hilarious (and yet so apt) story of Anne McCaffrey and the missing chapter of Plan B.

I'll bite.

In...1989, maybe? 1990?...I wrote a letter to, well, just these couple of authors who'd written three books I really liked. It was the first time I'd ever written to an author, and I wasn't really expecting a reply. Some time later, it was the Friday before MediaWestCon, and I was just about to head out the door, when one of my roommates said that I had a letter. It was from one of those two authors, which as I said, I really hadn't expected. It was reasonably long and answered the questions I had, and told me that the authors had just moved to Maine and that they were settling in and working on the fourth book. So I floated off to my convention, only to return home on Tuesday to the news that there was a second letter for me, from the other co-author, which was just as long and uncanned and wonderful.

Alas, both letters were lost in a subsequent move. But the memory didn't get lost.

My first memory

I picked up "Conflict of Honors" - I don't remember where or when. It was probably in Boston while I was at university. I was struck by the vividness of the characters...as whacky as Shan seemed at first, he was REAL, he was believable. The rest, well, I felt like I could invite them over for wine and cheese, no worries.

Then I saw "Agent of Change", and I thought, "Hmn, aren't they the same people who committed, er, wrote that book with Priscilla? Oooh, they ARE. Good, they're repeat offenders!" I have bought each book as I came upon them in stores, devouring each morsel with joy. It wasn't until I moved to Baltimore to work on the Hubble that I made the connection with Timonium and Middle River and now I still smack my head at how clueless I was.

Sharon, you and Steve are amazing and I am in awe of your art. I would read anything you write, including anything boring (like menus or technical journals).

Hey, I never worked on Hubble! Where DOES Middle River come in? Someone needs to build us a Liaden companion like the ones for Dorothy Dunnets' Lymond books, that explains all the little quotes and things.. sigh.

Middle River is where Edger's from, silly! :) Seriously, I should really get permission from Rolanni and Kinzel (when they get back from holiday) before drawing connections.

Thanks

I met you very briefly at BookExpo in New York in 2005. I was attending as a newbie editor without a booth, which means a lot of wandering around and feeling overwhelmed. I ran across the MM booth just as you were signing. I probably shouldn't admit to getting a signed copy as a non-bookseller...but it was fantastic to meet you, and the book was a great escape from the chaos!

I know I met you before this, but my first memory of you is when you asked me for an opinion on a yet unpublished short story of your own. I had not yet read any of your joint efforts with Kinzel. The story disturbed me and stuck with me. I hesitated to read any of the Liaden books, because I expected them to be in a similarly dark tone. I still have disturbing dreams about it. I guess that means that you did your job well,eh?

When I finally did read the rest of your works, I became instantly addicted. I love and hate you for that. Addictions, even to good things, are inconvenient.
Thanks for ALL the memories!
