rolanni: (Fledgling from Sam Chupp)

Sometime in the last couple of days, I caught up the orders for Saltation. I note that we now have less than 400 books available for adoption.

I see that Duainfey is continuing to move out into the world, showing a ranking in the 4,000s last I looked, fwiw, and opinions vary.

Perfesser Wranglin' has been ...challenging this past week, even though I only worked three days. Monday starts the first full week of the academic year. Pray for me.

For those in the area of Albany-Rensselaer, we -- Sharon Lee and Steve Miller -- will be signing at Flights of Fantasy on Thursday evening October 9, for a pre-Albacon warmup.

Steve is working on some Interesting News. Watch the skies.

I've been so much enjoying the Abney Park, Garmarna and other recently purchased CDs, that I have committed more Abney Park, which catches me right up, dammit. This is new musical territory for me -- what else is there Like This that y'all would recommend? Remember that I'm an Aging Rock and Guitar Ghod Listener here, just easing my way into strange waters.

Still not entirely free of the Con Cold, alas. Today was spent on the sofa, with Mozart, Fledgling, a notepad and a red pen. Still lots of work to do there and I could use a couple weeks off from the day-job to do it.

Oh, wait...

Someone had asked -- no, the icon above is not taken from the Baen cover (which is being painted as we speak). It was made by Sam Chupp, who narrated the Fledgling podcasts.

Hark! The phone!

Is Abney Park anything like Garmarna? If so I must find out more. Love Garmarna.

There is an indy band called Brother (http://www.brothermusic.com/) that is nothing like Garmarna (except I suppose for interesting instrumentation), but I and many of my friends who like one like the other too.

Oh, that's yummy!

Um, no. Abney Park isn't much more like Garmarna than Brother is like Garmarna. I note that I got to Garmarna because Robert Brown of Abney Park mentioned them as one of his favorite bands.

That still sounds wonderfully worth checking out. Thanks!

You've been playing "add a cliffhanger" too much. Keep up the good work!

Do you have a list of donors anywhere? I've lost track of which webbooks I've already donated to and which I haven't yet. I think I had a list somewhere..... *embarrassed shrug*

I recently discovered Abney Park, and I have found them good. Airships are good, as are pirates. Combining the two in a song is just wonderful.

Other groups that I rather enjoy and think sound at least vaguely similar are the "Cruxshadows" and "Poets of the Fall". Sadly, I have dial-up and all my YouTube bookmarks seem to be broken. Check out "Winterborn" and "Sophia" for Cruxshadows. "Lift", "Locking Up The Sun", and "Carnival of Rust" are good songs to start with for 'Poets of the Fall'.

I also believe they have their music on their websites. I don't have the URLs handy, so google is your friend.

I can't speak to the Abney Park end of things, but I was introduced to Garmarna through the Northside label's samplers, "Nordic Roots" 1,2,3 and they are very good; at the time I bought the first one they were charging $2 or $3, but I think they made their money back on additional CD sales later.
Style is, of course, all over the place (what else is a sampler for?) but the quality is very good. Amazon declares them still orderable, so get them there or at your local, willing-to-order store, as desired.

Rock star Richie Blackmore put together a band called Blackmore's Nights, which has a rock-the-RenFaire feel similar in tone & instrumentation to the Abney Park I just sampled over on youtube. I have 7 cds by them, all I've been able to find.

I could upload some sample songs for you, if you'd like, or you could check out youtube. I've gotten their cds very reasonably on ebay and half.com.
