Who here has skinned a computer? How hard is it (for someone who failed arts 'n crafts)? Does the skin leave a residue when it's removed? How sturdy are skins? Anything I should know but am too ignorant to ask on the topic?

If you use something like GelaSkins, you're dealing with the same material that's used to skin vehicles (like bus ads). They come off without leaving any residue, but can't be re-applied. Treat it the same as you would when applying a bumper sticker - line it up along the long edge, lay it down slowly, smooth out any bubbles/wrinkles as you go. A yardstick or dowel might help keep things even. You can peel back a little to correct, but you can't peel it all the way off. (I've worked w/various color-proofing systems, which involve laying down big sheets and aligning them - this just adds adhesive to the mix.)

Ah - I was going by the reviews I've seen of the GelaSkin & similar products, which suggested not trying to re-use. I went with a clear acrylic shell for my MacBook, but the GelaSkins were tempting.

I bought a skin from these people: http://www.schtickers.com/ . Note that they will do custom skins from any graphic you upload, which is what I did. It's a lovely crimson poppy on black. So far it's been on two different laptops without leaving a trace behind. I love it.

I know nothing. But i think they are really cool! I bought a snap-on hard shell case for my macbook (it's purple) and I like it for protective reasons. But the skins would be nifty if I didn't.
