Time Warner was persuaded that two doddering old folk out in the country with nary a cell signal nor a digital telephone to bless themselves with and back-to-back snowstorms on the way constituted An Emergency. A Repair Guy was duly scheduled to arrive today, but! because this was a Last Minute Scheduling, Time Warner couldn't for sure say when today the Guy would arrive. We -- which is to say, Steve -- therefore had to commit to standing Repair Guy Watch from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m.

When I got into work, I used the working phone on my desk to call Time Warner Customer Service to make sure that the Repair Guy was still on for Today Sometime. Megan assured me that this was the case and I transmitted this information via IM to Steve, who told me that in fact the Repair Guy was even now with him and had immediately declared the digital phone which had arrived in the "self-install" kit broken beyond hope of repair. He then took one of our old telephones, plugged it into the cable modem and Bob's your uncle. I didn't know you could do that. Since he was out and about anyhow, the Repair Guy proceeded to do some other minor upgrades to our cable service, ascertained that there was water in the cable at one point and did some sealing up.

All was over and done with by 9 a.m. and Steve was free to get on about his day, which included returning the DOA phones to the local branch of Time Warner and picking up two new ones, which are charging even as I type.

So! Except for the fact that I once again have a telephone in my office, dammit, all's well that ends well.

Yeah, right!

I know you two are great story tellers, but what did you tell them to convince them of that?

It's a good thing Steve was on cable watch. If cable guy had seen you he'd never have bought that story. :)

If you get desperate about the phone in the office you can always un-plug it.

The solution is the turn the ringer off on the base unit and move the second unit to the kitchen... as time permits I'll experiment with the old answering machine to see if it works, and if it does, well be back in gear with both conne4ctivity and a quiet office for Sharon assured...
