I find that I am of insufficient geekiness to figure out something that ought to be (she said naively) Dead Easy.

Can anyone walk me through the process for changing the "current music" option to "currently reading"?

(Yes, yes, I'm writing! You can't tell?)

Or is yours a paid account, which is entirely different?

I hadn't considered it...but it is true I am more often reading than listening--when in heavy design mode, music (unless it's memorized) distracts me.

Click on "your layers" or here http://www.livejournal.com/customize/advanced/layers.bml

In the table find user and click on the edit button
in the field under Edit Layer Source copy and paste:

set text_meta_music = "Personal soundtrack";

or whatever you want it to say and hit the Compile button.
that should do it!

I got mine to chane that way, anyway.

Tried this -- no go. I'm obviously doing something Really Simple wrong.

Will try again when I have the use of Other Side of my brain.

Okay, go here
http://www.livejournal.com/customize/layer.bml?w=user&journal=rolanni

click on the tabs and find something you'd like to override. It can be anything I think, like the "leave a comment" text, or a link color. This will generate a "layer" in advanced customization.
Now, go here: http://www.livejournal.com/customize/advanced/layers.bml
You should see something like this:

Click on edit and then copy and paste into the field this:
set text_meta_music = "Currently reading";
and hit compile.
It should work like this:

OK. I don't swear that I have Total Access to the Other Part of my brain, but I did establish that some styles have different overrides. So if I wanted to stay with Notepad, I couldn't override the "Current Music" (this being at the Customize Tab level). However, if I changed my look, I could do the one stop shopping thing, which, being at core lazy, I have done -- and I think I'll let the new do age a bit. Looks nice and clean, though I don't know that I'm totally happy with the link colors.

Just keep playing with the customization settings until you find the colors you like. Now, when your feeling really adventurous, I'll show you how to put a nifty banner header at the top.... *grin*
