rolanni: (Histoire des Etats et Empires de la Lune)

Back in April, we here at Eagles Over the Kennebec were talking about Secretaries Administrative Professionals Day and I mentioned that I feel a little funny receiving flowers and gifts on that day, because I don't consider myself to be a secretary administrative professional, but rather a writer. Some discussion followed; Science Fiction Writers Day was quickly proposed and seconded. [livejournal.com profile] hapaxnym suggested June 23 as a likely date of celebration, it being the day that Cyrano de Bergerac made the first successful (fictional) flight to the moon.

So! In my Official Capacity as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, I hereby proclaim June 23 Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day! A day of celebration and wonder! A day for all of us readers of science fiction and fantasy to reach out and say thank you to our favorite writers. A day, perhaps, to blog about our favorite sf/f writers. A day to reflect upon how written science fiction and fantasy has changed your life.

Take it and run with it -- pass it on -- have fun!

This sounds like fun. I want to celebrate on June 23rd too. I wonder what I'll do... Eat a moon cake? (and there is such a cake in the Chinese/Vietnamese culture that is eaten during the lantern festival) Or maybe I'll splurge on some books? Wear Spock ears? With imagination, there's no stopping.

Although to be realistic, I'll probably have a special post of some sort on my blog. I'll be checking back! =)

p.s. We need a codicil, specifying

cake, chocolate, readers cheering outside the doors of our writerly hovels, free ads in the NY Times; "kindly editor day" (no notes, one day a year), ...

I'm evil: I have tweeted you after reading the link for Althea's LJ today. I only wish I'd known earlier, but... hey that's me all over: a day late and dollar short.

But I love this idea, especially since of all the genres I know only Romance gets less respect than SF. And I sure as heck ain't no Administrative Personnel (not no mo').

A fellow blogger posted aobut this the other day. I only just noticed it this morning though. But I did do a post in honor of the Fantasy writers out there and acknowledging and sending out my thanks to some that I read or am going to read.

Here is a link if you were interested. Thanks!

It's my birthday and I'd chosen my profession because it was Alan Turings birthday, however if it's Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day I'll look into changing my career path...

I whole-heartedly agree

Even though it's a bit late in the game XD
My dad and I loved sci-fi, and his birthday is the twenty-third, which sounds utterly perfect. I wonder how we can make it nationally recognized?
There are so many sci-fi writers that aren't recognized, especially the greats like Herbert and Bradbury, in the twentieth century; there must be some way we could petition to get the day, and the writers acknowledged for the contributions they made to life and the science that we use now.
Thanks for posting!
