rolanni: (Histoire des Etats et Empires de la Lune)
[personal profile] rolanni
Back in April, we here at Eagles Over the Kennebec were talking about Secretaries Administrative Professionals Day and I mentioned that I feel a little funny receiving flowers and gifts on that day, because I don't consider myself to be a secretary administrative professional, but rather a writer. Some discussion followed; Science Fiction Writers Day was quickly proposed and seconded. [livejournal.com profile] hapaxnym suggested June 23 as a likely date of celebration, it being the day that Cyrano de Bergerac made the first successful (fictional) flight to the moon.

So! In my Official Capacity as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, I hereby proclaim June 23 Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day! A day of celebration and wonder! A day for all of us readers of science fiction and fantasy to reach out and say thank you to our favorite writers. A day, perhaps, to blog about our favorite sf/f writers. A day to reflect upon how written science fiction and fantasy has changed your life.

Take it and run with it -- pass it on -- have fun!

Reposted on my LJ! I'll also put this in the next "Headlines" update on <a href="http://crossedgenres.com</a>Crossed Genres</a>, and mention it in the CG blog.

Great idea! And I love how the day was chosen. Unfortunately I'm off work that day, but I expect on the 22nd I could tell all my customers at the bookstore that TOMORROW is Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day, so they should grab a good book from the SF/Fantasy section to read the next day. Yeah, that'll work.

Oh, good Idea! Maybe I'll put together a booklist and a display of Classic SF for the library.

(Hey, we do it for Talk Like a Pirate Day...)

Writers work more intensively than most other occupations that I can think of (surgeons come to mind) and writing is a private affair, without (mostly) others' realization of the effort, time, and all the rest of it that is involved. I think it's an excellent idea! Just think of all the things that have come about because of SF writers!

SFF writers day

And I want a cake, and a parade. Definitely a parade, that would be worth seeing.

This is a grand idea that should be pitched to all the folks on Indiebound. Get the independent shops to promote it, and everybody goes home happy.

A cake may be within reach, but I'm not seeing a parade this year. Take a rain check for next year?

This is a grand idea that should be pitched to all the folks on Indiebound.

Is this something you could do? I'm afraid I'm ignorant of Indiebound.

I concerned it might be used as an excuse to ghettoize & dismiss f&sf (even more than it is already), why be content with just one day?

Celebrating the writers, showing the covers instead of hiding them, does a lot toward breaking walls down, doesn't it? Don't have to be in anyone's face about it ...

Wow. Given that most of the time we labor under the radar, I think this is a nifty thought. The crucial question, really, is what is the preferred gift for honorees? Flowers? Chocolate? Aged single malt Scotch? Books? Space shuttle tickets?

Told my librarian. She said, oh, good, why don't you fix up a display. And immediately fell sick.

We'll see what we can do.

Meantimes, what is the source of June 23 as Cyrano's visit to the moon? Publication date? Internal date?

Date: 2009-06-09 07:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] countrycousin.livejournal.com
OK, I found the reference, internally, Ch 6, he takes off on the eve of the festival of St John the Baptist. The festival is on June 24.

Apostrophe?

From: [identity profile] alanbaxter.livejournal.com
By the way, I hate to be a pedant, but the logo on the Facebook page has an apostrophe error. Being a plural, it should read Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers' Day (as opposed to Writer's). Given that this is a day all about writers, we should make sure we get that right!
