A pretty fall day spent mostly inside, except for a futile trip the post office. No checks. No money orders. No quartershare payment. Hm. Must write dea'Gauss.

Spent some time rereading the notes I left for myself regarding the direction of this book. Obviously, my real notes have been taken hostage by aliens bent on world domination.

My brain, such as it is, has been helpfully feeding me scenes from a book that is (a) not the book I'm working on (b) not the book that [livejournal.com profile] kinzel is working on (c) not the book the synopsis of which Madame the Agent is pitching. I found myself wondering, as I drove out this morning, if I might not take a half-hour-or-hour a day and kinda sorta write this other book on the side. Arrrrgggh.

[livejournal.com profile] kinzel has some kind of chicken stew thing percolating in the crockpot, and it smells wonderful.

Why do the books that don't have to be written start coming to call when you're busy? I was just reflecting that I have a prequel to finish and a second existing manuscript to expand for the Agent... but what I really want to do is write the fantasy duology that just dropped in my head last week. :P

My theory is -- because you are busy, and have all the windows open and bread crumbs on the sills to entice Ideas to come in. So, you get Ideas.

There's also probably -- at least for me -- more than a little "Ooh! Shiny!" involved in the Ideas that aren't under contract, which are over in the "work" pile.

Can you just run with those ideas, even if they're twisting sidewise to the outline?

Also, can I come over for dinner? No, wait. Nine hour flight, it'll be cold by then. Foo.

I could -- but the scenes which are arising that Belong Not, appear to be for a contemporary fantasy. The two books on deadline are both space opera.

As for the Alien Notes -- the backbrain has been fleshing out the characters while I was on hiatus from the manuscript, and most of the Cool Ideas that now go thunk! are character motivation things. Not entirely unexpected, considering what a messy writer I am -- and not necessarily a Bad Thing, since the characters are standing on their own two feet and starting to give me back chat.

I do -- sometimes, briefly -- envy writers who can write to notes/outline.

Also, can I come over for dinner?

Any time.

Yeah--sympathies--I know about being a messy writer. Boy howdy do I.

And great! If I get a chance to go back east again, it's a date!

Well, it's OK by me, but then, I don't have a year's worth of 25.5 hour days to send you.
