OK, this is Just Silly

It is, according to Weather Underground 84F/29C outside at this moment, which is plenty warm enough, thanks.

Here in the attic office it is 87F/31C.

For some reason, I'm having a hard time keeping my mind on all this Important Work here on the desk. . .

OSHA

Wow, 87 degrees. I start complaining at 75° here. Unfortunately, OSHA doesn't have any regulations regarding temperature, only recommendations. "OSHA recommends temperature control in the range of 68-76° F and humidity control in the range of 20%-60%." [1]. Still, I'd mention it to your equivalent of a Campus Health and Safety Office, assuming it's a battle you wish to fight.

On the other hand, exercise in absurdist comparisons, back when I was an army instructor in the Signal School, we had quite specific standards and a "sling psychrometer" with which to calculate the temperature-humidity index and decide whether to dismiss class.

The effing US Army had better job-safety standards than OSHA and Colby College????

Air conditioning is the best productivity stimulus.

OT: Liaden books in Russian

I just happened to be looking at amazon.co.uk (Fledgling paperback due out Feb 23 next year according to them, sames as on .com site) and noticed a couple of books by (transliterated) "Sharon Li" and "Stev Miller" in Russian. The blurb for "Soldat Kristalla" says:

Galactic war lasts already century. Humanity had long ago been learned to genetically program future soldiers - originated for the battles and more not for which. However, precisely for one of these "soldiers willy-nilly" one must, in the collaboration with the pilot ace and the smuggler, complete war and become the rescuer not only of its, but also enemy race..."

And also in Russian, "Torgoviy Balans" ("Trade Balance"):

"Humanity colonized hundreds of planets. Now in the galaxy side by side live, deal and war the descendants of earthlings - and "strangers". But war - severe, terrible - is brought down to one planet for another. Friends become enemies, enemies - by allies, and the peacefully coexisted races spill the blood of each other. The following peace, which entered the senseless galactic war, can become Liaden... and this will become its end. As to stop inevitable?!"

Unfortunately they don't give the blurb in Russian...

(Each only one copy, and from other booksellers, and both rather expensive, but I'm tempted...)
