rolanni: (walk in the snow)

1. It's snowing!

2. Went to talk to a writing class last night. Some good questions, including the perennial "How do you find time to write?" which I answered as Ursula LeGuin had once answered me, "If you want to be a writer, you'll find time to write." I fear this was not what my interlocutor wished to hear.

3. Steve won the auction for a metal sculpture paper plane and is on his way to Auburn to pick it up. On the way home, he'll stop in Augusta to pick up the first printing of our own [livejournal.com profile] jhetley's new book Dragon's Bones (available for order at the SRM Publisher site: http://www.srmpublisher.com). Ref. (1) above.

4. Knee is still bruised and swollen and sore. Tired of this now.

5. Wouldn't you know we'd get compared to Charles Dickens in a two star review?

OTOH, Fledgling has 23 5-star reviews and only 2 2-star reviews. Personally, I thought it was a delightful read, and have said so on my LJ, though no doubt people will think I'm biased.

Oh, no, Fledgling has been a crowd-pleaser, no mistake. It was the juxtaposition that made my head spin. And to ask myself -- unworthily, no doubt -- if the reviewer perhaps had a teensy little axe to grind with the web itself.

Got Fledgling in the mail today and read it. I really liked the smoothed out version! Now I'm looking forward to the finished Saltation version, though I guess I'll first be re-reading the online version again...

I don't know how anyone can read a negative review of fledgling and not get angry. I almost feel personally insulted when they don't like the project that I (personally) helped to sponsor and bring to life. Having so small a part in something I consider to be so indescribably filled with goodness has prejudiced me not at all, I think. LOL! (Riiiiigggghhhtt)

Bookses? *perks*

I've had some people ask when they could order from the SRM website -- apparently 'pre-order' doesn't work right now.

Ha, no one wants to hear the "if you want to be an X, you find time to X," dictum. My wife is currently struggling with the illustrator's version of that.

Never read any of her books -- what would be a good one to start with?

Although I heartily recommend her as well. I haven't read that particular novel yet, but I've read the "wolf" books, The Hob's Bargain, and a couple of others.

Briggs did write a book called Dragon Bones, which is teamed with Dragon Blood. Those are good books to start with. Her current series features Mercy Thompson, auto mechanic and sometimes coyote, in a great series full of werewolves and vampires. If you like urban fantasy, these are some of the best going (imho).

Neat sculpture! How big is it?

Well -- the plane is about so big by so big by so big.

I guess it may have started as a 9X12 or 12 x 15 piece of sheet metal .... I'll get particulars later, in the rush of things today it got left in the wrapping at the office..

My copy of Fledgling arrived in Sunny Sydney yesterday, thanks so much! I just read the two-star review on Amazon & think maybe that guy is used to books where the whole plot is laid out in nice, easy-to-follow chunks & he's not used to having to think along the way. Maybe.
