I have a new cell phone! It is beautiful. It has a slidey case, and a camera and bluetooth and web browsing and texting and a calendar and all kinds of other things that I'll probably never use, and! a screen that's big enough for the Hopelessly Nearsighted to read, in pretty! colors!

*has gadget love*

It is, of course, a Tracfone, because Who in Ghod's Name can afford a monthly phone contract with T-Mobile? My last cell was also a Tracfone, and the one before that, stretching into the chilly mists of time. I transferred the number and minutes from the old phone to the new one, and Now I Wait, phone-free, for 72 hours. I did lose about 1,000 minutes in the process (use your cell phone, much?), because they'd been transferred from the previous phone to the now-newly-previous phone, and sorta fell off the end of the table. Still, I'm not gonna starve, and it was totally worth it to get the big screen in pretty! colors!

*sigh*

In other news, our film viewing of late has been Unremittingly High-Brow. We have in recent evenings viewed Wall-ee and also Race to Witch Mountain, both of which we, and Hexapuma, enjoyed profoundly. Yes, we are shallow -- all three of us.

Today it is sunny, but cold, and I really need to find my scarf.

There's a throwaway line in one of the J.D. Robb books where a character mentions that the music that's playing is a classic. A teenager asks, "Is that Beethoven or something?" And the reply is, "No, it's Springsteen."

does anybody know the artist of this song?

Sometimes I wish the sun would just explode.

I'll take all you sons of ******* when I go.

We just had several people over to our house. All view many more movies than we do. When we asked which movies of the past three months we should see, they were unanimous - Princess and the Frog, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

You are not alone in your highbrow tastes.

Shiny phone. I just did the same thing with my old bar of soap TracFone. New phone haz colors, and all the buttons work!

Love the movie choices. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs comes out on DVD in the early part of January. You will like it.

Ooh! Congratulations!

Thank you for recommending Tracfone back in February. I too have many too many minutes stacked up on it, but it is just the thing.

I appreciate the Tracfone tip. I currently have a Razr on a Pay as you go plan with Cingular, but my options on such a plan are limited and my phone is old and slow. But, am loathe to sign a contract with anybody because I simply don't use the thing all that much.

I also have a Tracfone, which I rarely use, but has proven highly reliable for both home and travel use.

I think of my cell phone as an Instrument of Defense, first. If the tire comes off the car a mile outside of town in a snowstorm, I have Contact with the outside world, or, more importantly, AAA. I juice it up once a year and basically forget about, which is how I happened to have so many minutes; they roll and keep on accumulating, until you change phones and some fall off the wagon.

What model did you get? I have an ancient Tracfone (brick like, black dot matrix display on gray screen) that I've been thinking of swapping in for something made this century...

I have an LG290C. The newly-previous phone was a Nokia candy bar with a teensy gray screen and black letters. Before that, I think I might've had the twin to your black brick.

Being from out of town it is an education reading this blog. Now I know there's something called Tracfone, which is, I presume, what we would call pre-paid mobile. I have to admit to a similar buzz on the acquisition of new technology, especially good-looking technology. I've had a cute little flip-top Samsung in a seductive shade of red for a while now; it only does the basics but I don't care. I dropped it the other day and now it has a scratch and I am grief stricken.

Avatar has just reached our cinemas - my weekend entertainment issue is solved.

I really liked Witch Mountain. I think The Rock is my guilty indulgence. He's just so darn charming. And who could dislike Pixar?! Their shorts are great too.

Did you have to reprogram your numbers or do they transfer for Tracfone? I recently switched phones/providers and had to re-enter all my numbers. And then did it again when I returned the phone for another model.

I had to put all my contacts in by hand. An Unforeseen Benefit of not using my cell phone all that much is that I only have a couple dozen contacts.

cell service in Maine

Do tracphones have good reception in Maine? I live in Chicagoland now, but when we come home to Maine, reception to my Verizon phone is...problematical. To make calls, I have to go out to the end of a rocky point at our lake, which can be mighty inconvenient, especially when every mosquito around zeros in on you!

Do tracphones have good reception in Maine?

It Depends.

Tracfone plays off of the other guys' lines, so if you're far from the grid -- like at camp on the lake -- you have spotty reception, if you have reception at all. To get cell phone connectivity at my house, I have to go outside and stand on the deck, and we're only about 8 miles from the interstate. T-Mobile can't do any better -- the infrastructure just isn't there -- but they'll happily charge me a zillion bucks a month on contract.

I have a Tracfone Samsung-something, entry-level, cheap. Works fine except for a major design flaw which is clearly intentional on the part of the makers. You can use it to go online and get data -- I don't know, sports scores, weather... I totally am uninterested in this. But the top-level screen has two choices, Menu or Browser. And Browser is the button that in normal menu operation goes back out of something to the previous level. So it is absurdly easy to find yourself losing minutes connected to the Internet when you had no such intention. Fortunately the hang-up/end/exit button has no such ambiguities. I have trained myself to "when in doubt, hit END" and they haven't managed to steal any minutes from me in a while.

My new phone has menu on the left button and browser on the right, which seems fine to me since this is the first cell phone I've had that claims to be able to browse the internet.

Alas, you cannot browse in the internet on the new Tracphone. Your phone says *no data service* if you try that, just as if you try to send a photo it'll tell you *no data service* ... texting yes, other neato things, not so much.
