Eagles Over the Kennebec

Yep, those are eagles. My professionally-trained in-house ornithologist says so.

Do these eagles prefer the fort or the gazebo as a home? Or did they go to the trouble of building a nest?

There are eagle nests all over the place. They seem to prefer building on the cross-beam of power-line towers.

The fort is at Fort Halifax Park (where I have been known to go in times of stress to put my back against the grass so I can watch the eagles playing over the river).

The gazebo is at the newly constituted park next to the town office/fire/police station. I hadn't known it had a name. Anyhow it sits high (Fort Halifax Park is right at river level), and it's possible to walk out to the edge and look down at the river and, across the river, at Waterville. I hadn't noticed any eagles from that vantage, but it's been awhile since I've gone that way. Must take the camera over some day soon and see what I can catch.

A lot of the power-line nests are actually ospreys. I have to wait to see a bird on the nest before deciding, and need a good clear look because ospreys also have white heads. Eagle nests are usually larger, though.

I know that Ben Franklin didn't think much of eagles--but I enjoy watching eagles. They do their thing with such style.

And falcons--falcons are Definitely Cool....
