Got a couple hour breather at the day-job; made fish. That was fun. I may make more fish tomorrow.

At home, I sat with the damned taxes, punching numbers into boxes. I had hoped that I would have this done tonight, so the accountant would have time to do her thing and the forms mailed on February 1. In some beneficent universe, somewhere, that happened, and we got a refund, too. This? Is not that universe.

In between the day-job and the taxes, the D&A money for Mouse and Dragon and some walkabout royalties rolled in -- and there was much rejoicing. Steve and I met at the bank, did the deposit, then went out to Dairy Queen for milkshakes.

Yes, we do lead a life of wild, unremitting abandon; how nice of you to notice.

In weather news, it rained and snowed, was briefly cloudy, then brilliantly sunny, so that's most of the notes struck.

This morning, when I drove out to work the meadow on my right was a wide expanse of murky water over green ice. It looked like the field had been paved in peridot.

The oddest January

I know that January thaw is a Maine tradition, but this is ridiculous. We've had 55 degree days, the brook "went out" with a great crash at 3:30 on Monday afternoon cutting a gash through the snow and unfortunately across the lower field. The current across our road was not strong enough to bend a Volvo's path, so I drove to the annual budget meeting with a bow wave just cresting the front fender. I worried about returning three hours later, but the water was no higher.
Your field this morning was a peridot pavement -- mine was a white and black disaster scene, lumps of dirt and piles of wood, snowbanks cut by flood waters which had by mid-morning today retreated to their usual haunts. Temple Stream is clogged by ice jams in multiple places, with ten foot tall ice cakes standing on end in some places and a slurry of mud, ice, and water slowly chugging along in others. Pray for one of two outcomes: enough warm weather to melt the ice, or a long period of cold so that the current can cut its way through the jam. All the winter floods I've known have happened with a third outcome: more rain, more melting, and --
Anyone have some nice property for sale in a guaranteed Liaden climate? I'm tired of living on Surebleak!

Thou Art God! (It sounds like the entry of a creator who has a Real Job elsewhere and is creating the world in their "copious spare time" -- I can believe that's how this universe was designed...)
