I thought you had been spelling Boss Conrad's first name with two 'n's--'Jonni'. Am I mistaken, or did you change it?

...Two nns it is. Good catch.

Is the cat Boss Silk from I Dare around?

Isn't her name Delacroix with one L? I just checked (googled) her and found the one-L spelling in several reviews.

I like lists -- this is fun! (no complaints, please, from the creative).

Kathy
with serious complaints about 20-30 inches of snow going to Maryland while the sun shines in Maine!

I'm gonna blame that one on the cat sitting helpfully on my lap while I was typing. Lists! Coon cats are good at lists!

*sigh*

I could do with a little fresh snow in Maine, myself.

Just checked the MM edition of Conflict of Honor and Priscilla's name is indeed Delacroix--one'L'. But ooh, list=shiny!
Re: all that snow. I am in Maryland, it is still snowing. Anyone up in Maine who is missing their snow fix is welcome to come on down to MD and help shovel. I will provide tea and chocolates.

You might want to do this on a spreadsheet so that you can sort by "type" as well as "book."

Um. No. I never, ever want to do anything on a spreadsheet. Instruments of the devil; and Do Not Mix with writing.

Spreadsheets are definitely evil. I am chained to my desk for the day dealing with the program budget for next year as well as attempting to figure out what we have now!

I used Microsoft Excel to create a big table to track the whereabouts of various characters in a story I was writing. It was that or blow continuity left and right. It worked for me. However, I fully recognize that many, perhaps most, writers are just Not That OCD. ;)

From: [identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com
I don't know that it's a deficiency of OCD, in my case, as much as a side-of-the-brain issue. I can make a spreadsheet OR I can write a story. Keeping a running spreadsheet while I'm writing a story? Something's going to go splooey -- and it'll probably be the spreadsheet. Story-brain is a Powerful Force.

I think it might be necessary to connect Daav and Jen Sar for the copyeditor. (I feel for her.)

Do you still have the Liaden/Terran dictionary from the back of the Ace editions of Local Custom and Scout's Progress?

The convergence of storylines, as well as the heading for "sentient vegetation," fills me with glee.

Date: 2010-02-06 07:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com
I feel for her, too; ghod, what a nightmare! I wonder what it would be like to write a book in English.

I do still have those dictionaries; this is the build from the first 130 pages of Ghost Ship -- excepting the names, which I just figured to fill in while I was there...and, looking back, most of those names are in play. I'm thinking I may need to send a case of wine along with the finished 'script.

Hand

I was thinking a Hand was more in the way of general purpose muscle with bodyguard being the usual province of a select group of Hands who could also have other duties.

Redundancy all over again

Date: 2010-02-07 01:39 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
If your copyeditor wants to look up, say, the Road, or Conrad’s turf, how will she know to find them under Port Road or Blair Road?

Redundancy helps. List:

Port Road—the Road
And
Road, the—Port Road

Blair Road—Conrad’s turf
And
Conrad’s turf—Blair Road

Don't forget some of the other common cussing words; MUD! and Wind! and Great Space man!

I think those folks of the Tree and Dragon tend to expand their vocabularies with each adventure; ahem, just like I do.
Edger, and Handler, and the concept of ephemeral art....oh my.

One spelling correction. Isn't Gondola Startport actually Gondola Starport? And, will the copy editor know what Logics means? I'm figuring you mean AI's but I'm not sure.

Yours,
Jenny

Late to the Party

Date: 2010-02-07 08:03 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Delm - head of a Clan, usually 2 Lines
Line - one subgroup of a Clan, usually with the same last name.
First Speaker - second in command of a Clan, unless the Delm is too young, in which case, regent for the Nadelm.
Nadelm - young Delm, Delm in waiting.

There was a Terran-Liaden Diectionary at the back of Pilot's
Choice (Meisha Merlin copy) that might be resurrected/cannabalised?

Please excuse any presumptions in my trying to define them.

I'm trying to remember everything that confused me (and Priscilla)

"First Speaker - second in command of a Clan, unless the Delm is too young, in which case, regent for the Nadelm."

Er, Nadelm = delm to be; if of age is also 2nd in command of clan.

First Speaker = Eldema (an honorific address for Delm or one who holds Delm's authority in trust)

Also, isn't it "Delm" by definition is never too young. If Nadelm is too young, clan appoints Eldema-pernard'i (First Speaker in Trust) until Nadelm comes of age.

Is it Waymart or Waymeet? I seem to remember Waymeet, but this could just be my misreading...
