rolanni: (Marvin's not happy)

The previous PSA on this subject was in error. By following Google's instructions, one merely hides the BUZZ tag; one does not actually turn it off -- because, yanno, why would you want to do that?

The real instructions for driving a stake through BUZZ's heart are here: http://www.scotxblog.com/legal-tech/gmails-turn-off-buzz-still-does-not-turn-off-buzz-heres-how-to-really-do-it/

So! Who has a web-based email service that they like?

Hotmail always worked ok for me. Gmail gets less spam and has better filters, but at least Hotmail isn't trying to swallow the universe.

I'm happy with Yahoo, but I don't need my e-mail to do much for me.

I really, really like Google mail, as it allows me to manage three different e-mail workstreams without losing my mind (not to mention it pushes to my phone, turning that into a mobile office). I haven't found anything else thatw orks as well, so even through my hate-on for Google, I kept it.

But this.... this may be the final straw. My only hope is now that they're doing to techies what they've already done to writers, maybe we can actually slap them down hard enough where it really hurts.

(Oh hell. Does this mean I have to get an iPhone? Shoot me now, please)

what a pita. As you know, Bob, my gmail account was involved in Worldcon programming and there's no way in hell any of that should be public information or be mined privately, for that matter.

Well if you carefully followed all of the instructions on that previous link it talks you through those steps. All but the active blocking of anyone who is following you already. Every other bit of it actually was in there. But it wasn't laid out in a step by step manner instead you had to read all of the instructions.

I think it took me three times of turning buzz off and back on and off again while reading the instructions to actually get rid of it. :p

I'm still not certain what wormy idea entered Google's heads that people wanted to be in a social networking site. If I want that I'll sign up for one.

I've used Hotmail for years. Their spam filter seems teachable, since I get stuff for both writing scams and architectural projects sent to the same address.

Thanks for posting this. I think I have turned it off.
But I'm not a computer expert.

Thanks for this. How presumptuous of Google to do this - and how scary that they think it's okay to do it!

I still love my gmail

I have a yahoo account, used to have a hotmail account as well. But I love my gmail. I also love my picasa photo stuff and the google calendar.

They should NOT have done what they did with Buzz. But having gotten rid of it, I'm still keeping my gmail. It's been the best overall for me.

If Buzz had been an opt-in product, I don't think there would even be an issue. As it is, of course, they were WRONG in so many ways.

I'm hoping they just get the message, straighten up and fly right. I just can't recommend any other of the web based email services that would be better....

You have the korval.com domain - could you set up email addresses on it? Our Web host allows unlimited email addresses, and I can set the maximum storage size. I can access it online using the Squirrel Mail, Horde or RoundCube online tools.

Does it have to be free? I use Fastmail.fm for my business and access it primarly via Web, and I like the service.

Fastmail.fm and gmail have long been my two recommendations for webmail. This fiasco with Buzz is definitely making me think twice about recommending gmail. Fastmail offers a variety of accounts ranging from free webmail with some relatively innocuous advertising to inexpensive webmail with no ads to various other accounts that allow POP/SMTP access as well and larger amounts of storage and other services.
