My, the rental car is nice. Sirius radio piped in from I assume, Sirius, and lots of icy cold air inside, which is good, because outside -- not so icy cold. About 95F, assuming the car's weather station is correct. We've divided the day between business and pleasure; business being the seeking, finding and talking to of various bookstore personnel, and also the signing of stock. We also stopped by the Florida Mall and did a tour -- malls being fairly rare in our native neck of the woods. We observed many people, had lunch and ice cream and in general had a fine time. This message is being written from the Turkey Lake Whole Foods Cafe, where I sit with a cup of coffee to hand. In a little while, we'll hit the road again, and eventually arrive at the Pirate Dinner Theater, where I expect and believe that a good time will be had by all.

Oasis was wonderful. We're especially grateful to Susan Cole, con liaison extraordinaire, and also to Juan Sanmiquel, Steven Grant, and the entire membership of the convention. Everyone was welcoming and helpful and we just had a blast.

For the legions of fans of Hexapuma, Mozart and Scrabble, who I know were breathlessly awaiting news of their doings and especially their comfort -- the housesitter tells us that Maine's heat wave broke on Thursday, so the cats are comfy.

Though we have Harwill the platypus as our travel companion, we only narrowly missed adopting a Webkinz grey-and-white kitten in...perhaps it was Sack's, where I also managed to avoid becoming the owner of a positively gorgeous steampunky necklace. Had I been only fifteen years younger, I'd've snapped it up. Sure was something, though.

So, how was your (holiday) weekend?

Your weekend sounds much more interesting than mine. I did non-exciting but necessary things like laying new linoleum tile flooring in the bathroom and washing the dog. I also spent some of the weekend listening to recordings from this year's Northwest Folklife Festival. (http://listen.nwfolklife.org/) Recordings aren't nearly as good as being there, but they're better than nothing.

Happy Weekend

I'm glad you had a good weekend. It's always nice to get away. I spent the weekend with Saltation, which I was pleased to find in the Livongston, TX public library, along with Fledgling, Duainfey and Longeey. Having gotten my hot little hands on Saltation, I'm now able to wait patiently until you get your supply of books to send out. Besides, M&D will be here this week from Amazon.

The staff member was interested in my opinion on you guys, as she hadn't read them yet. I am recommending additional acquisitions, and I'm tempted to buy them a copy of Partners in Necessity to get them started, if they will agree to circulate it.

Anyway, my best to Steve, and safe travels to home.

Friday, Mouse and Dragon arrived at my house and was eagerly and happily devoured. Once I finished that, I felt that a reread of Fledgling was in order and that was accomplished. Now I await eagerly for Saltation to arrived on Wednesday. (I decided I couldn't wait and really, owning two copies is all right. Now I will have a loaner.)

Had a great time at MarCon in Columbus, OH. One of the best i've had these past few years. Three things made it possible: 1) Mouse and Dragon, 2) O'Toole's restaurant 3) new DJ for the Con's Saturday night dance. Thank you for Mouse and Dragon. Started it late Friday night and finished it when I got home Sunday evening. Yes, my eyes filled for all of Chapter 38. I can't remember the last time a book made me tear up. Thank you for the experience, beautifully written.

Not a holiday weekend in the antipodes so would have been normal weekend for me if my washing machine hadn't decided to die mid-wash on Saturday, so Sunday was spent shopping for new washing machine and then helping parents out with recovering stuff from old hard drive for new computer.

In spare moments I am re-reading my eARC of Mouse and Dragon.

I was down at the mini-Nycon (at the house of Zander Nyrond, UK filker, and his lady), where we had fun and a bit of actual singing (filk, and ended up singing 'campfire' songs like The Quartermaster's Stores).

And before I went to sleep last night I finished 'Feed' (Mira Grant, a.k.a. Seanan McGuire). And dreamed about zombies and politics (oh what a surprise!)...

We did Baycon. Lots of fun. Lots of writerly things going on. Peter Beagle, who was the GoH, did a master workshop, reviewing six partial manuscripts. One of them was mine. He liked it. He asked to read the rest of it, which just sort of made my day.

Drove down to do volunteer trailwork...met up with a worktrip in progress, fixed two trail slumps, one of which involved breaking rocks to re-establish the tread in the right place, removed a large boulder off the trail (on the order of 500-1000 lbs) (and some hundreds of feet down the steep hillside), rebuilt/dug out 75-100 feet of trail (reducing the intermittent grade from 30% to 12-15%), plus a wonderful drive back on squiggly roads in a remarkably green California (lots of late rain this year, so the hillsides haven't entirely turns gold and grey.

Ending with a night of excellent sushi and drinks with a good friend.

Yay!
