I'm not much of a writer yet (just got my first rejection) but I hope to be editing the first third of my Torn World story and continuing the other three or so stories I haven't even got finished yet. (Though I just realized that one of them suddenly has 4k words in the current chapter. *facepalm* Guess I'm gonna have to break that one up a bit...)
This is all provided that I don't get flooded away and teaching the neighbor kid about how to create his own website doesn't eat my time...
Um. A lawyer? In my experience, lawyers don't do awfully well with publishing contracts; they look at the words to make sure it's all in Good Legal Form, but miss Horrible Things like basket accounting clauses, because they don't know why those things are Horrible. Your mileage may vary.
That aside -- congratulations on achieving a contract!
I've been researching all the advice from SFWA and the Author's Guild, etc., to see what I need to look for. I'm pointing all this out to the lawyer. Guess I have to watch everybody, no?
Someday, an agent will be willing to take me on, and I can let him/her worry about this stuff.
If you have an unsigned contract in your hand, NOW is the time to go agent-hunting -- firstly it signals that you're a serious prospect, and secondly they can collect their 15% for vetting a contract, which is a great sweetener. Also: agents can negotiate your advance upwards to cover their 15% -- something a lawyer isn't going to do.
I received the new David Weber Honor Harrington book and read it in one sitting. So great to get new books from favoritie SF authors. Re-read Mouse and Dragon this weekend. Hurrah for all the SF authors who persevere in spite of day jobs. Thank you! KF
I made a phone call to congratulate a writer-friend, who said, "Hmmm. Well.... Have a good day!" I think he was writing at the time. Besides that, I'm lying on my back, foot in the air, Macbook on my stomach, swimming in Vicoden and correcting the inevitable typos. It's a good day -- can't prove otherwise!
Reading a book by two of my favorite science fiction authors is the best way I can think of to celebrate. Conveniently, after much impatient waiting, the library let me have Mouse and Dragon yesterday.
Lessee...reading sf/f and telling you & your husband what incredible writers you are!! Which explains how many times your books have been read by me and why I now have a second set to loan out to the people to whom I gush about your writing!!
I'm celebrating knowing too many writers who keep bringing out new books and recommending others I didn't know (yes, Seanan, I'm looking at you!), by reading some of them. I'm also running out of shelf space...
Would you believe I just finished re-reading the primary Liaden Universe books including all the Chap books? Had the urge to do it after reading "Mouse and Dragon". Spent the day working on a reading order list from your post of May 7th. Yes, I know, I know, "Get-A-Life". But, its been great fun. Honest! A lot more fun than my mundane life. Did not realize I had ended on SF&F Writers' Day!
Waiting impatiently for Mouse & Dragon which, I have been informed, is on its way. Somehow the wait seems more excruciating when it's actually in the mail as opposed to before the notification is sent.
Oh yes, and experiencing the Ontario Earthquake of 2010. Fortunately there was no serious damage or injury and so the general reaction seems to be thankfullness at the lack of harm and a lot of jokes involving various politicians.
since I'm not a writer, celebrating by what I do best - READING. since Sun. have read the 2 T.K. Harper Cat books, re-read Saltation & Mouse and Dragon, got the new Honor Harrington story, a couple of Castle's older Harmony series books. That's it so far Lorna
