*We went to the ocean yesterday, and it was a fine day for it. Even the moose thought so.

*I am entering a sartorial panic -- I'm down to three denim shirts and two really shouldn't be seen in public. Denim shirts are a Fashion Necessity up here in the North, where they double as light-weight jackets on cool summer days, and are the reason Rolanni owns no cardigan-style sweaters. In any case, denim shirts with logos on them (my preferred sort) seem to have gone Out of Vogue.

I may be reduced to buying unmarked Dickies at the local KMart. Before accepting this bland fate, however, I did a websearch and came up with this. Just think of a Shirt of Stars, with each star embroidered with the title of one of our books. Con Clothes!

Not what I was looking for, mind you, and by the time we were done with the embroidery, it would be so expensive a garment that I'd be afraid to wear it, but it was good for a fantasy.

*For those interested in such things, well-known rascal and man on the town, Pascal Bonenfant, has compiled a resource page for 18th century Britain, including many cant words and phrases.

*The weather is lowering, gray and damp, but will it rain? Of course not.

*I find myself peeved at the day-job in the matter of compensation, particularly in the face of having an entire start-up department added to my plate without discussion, or, apparently, recourse. However! Balance is. The new webmail system is so difficult to deal with (to access it from home, I would have to shut down a lot of stuff that runs on my machine by default before signing into the college system), that I will no longer be checking in via email from home. I used to do that, even though I wasn't paid for it, because I thought Being Responsible counted. Clearly, it does not, and I'm glad to have that cleared up.

*The cats -- by whom I mean, Mozart and Hexapuma -- have been Very Clingy today. At one point, I had both of them on my desk, helping me answer email; one snuggled on either side of the keyboard.

*Where the hell did all this laundry come from?

Speaking of denim and embroidery... I have had good luck in the past with Queensboro. I've never tried their denim shirts (http://www.queensboro.com/search?search=Denim&x=0&y=0) but free to minimal cost per logo and a minimum 4-shirt order not bad.

Denim shirts

This is my first post here. I read *all* your work in the Baen ebook format. Thank you for many happy hours reading and re-reading. :-)

I think a single 'Tree and Dragon' patch would look *great*. Don't know whether you just go for the Korval emblem or 'CREW' 'Dutiful Passage' above and below, but either way, next convention I suspect they'll be literally trying to buy the shirt off your back.

Actually, thinking about denim shirts, and the climate of Surebleak, what are Korval's on-port Terran staff likely to be issued for workwear? Any jewellery is a really dumb idea when working on anything electrical or with moving parts from a health and safety perspective and denim shirts, overalls etc. with a patch for those who would be wearing the pin on their dress or office garb seems appropriate.

That of course gives you another option: 'MAINTENANCE' above, Tree and Dragon, and 'Surebleak Port' below. ;-)

Oh, I am so up for that! There could be a whole load of them for different crew and port personnel. Not just Korval, does Binjali's have its own badge? Solcintra Port?

It would be a cool way of spreading interest in the books if a number of us wore them at conventions (or even at work where that is permitted). "What's the badge?" "Oh, that's Korval." "Who are they?" "Well, there's this series of books..."

Question: are the Korval emblem and the names of places permitted to be used if fans want to use them on clothing like that? I know the tree-and-dragon logo is on merchandise from SRM Publisher, so that at least is copyright. I'd prefer to buy them from SRMP, but can understand if the authors don't have time or energy to do it.

Welcome, Ian.

We -- which is to say, Steve and I, did Tree-and-Dragon denim shirts for fans, back a long time ago now. The shirts were WONderful, and lasted a long time (of the three denim shirts I still have, two bear the Tree-and-Dragon). We offered options -- I can't remember exactly what they were at this distance: Crew, Dutiful Passage, I think was one.

The downside, as usual, was the paperwork. We had to take pre-orders, and do fulfillment. When there were two of us freelancing full-time, we could arrange the time to do the extra work by, oh, not sleeping. But now that I'm working the day-job and Steve is handling all of SRM by himself, we're using the not-sleeping time to write.

They were great shirts, though.

Tree & Dragon shirts etc.

I suspect that putting their emblem on 'rag mannered Terran staff' or even worse dressing like a terran would fall outside the melanti of most Liad based clans.

Some clans based on outworlds with majority Terran populations could well have adopted the Terran custom though.

That still leaves us with possible patches for Korval, Koval sponsored operations such as Binjali yard, which may well have their own logo, Hugglelans, and just possibly Ixin if line Gobelyn is still around.

There is textev (see Balance of Trade, 3rd chapter: Norn ven'Deelin's assistant/Ynsolt'i agent has an embroidered Ixin vest over a silk shirt) that Liadens *do* use their clan emblems on their clothing, but I suspect that the style is much dressier, even flamboyant and is limited to clan members.

If there is is any way they can be outsourced to a reliable supplier who will manufacture, take orders and ship on your behalf leaving you with more money for the Necessities of being owned by several cats with no ongoing loss of writing or leasure time, it would be a *very* *good* *thing*.

Perhaps there is someone at Baen who has experience with promotional and tie-in merchandise that could recommend a supplier. You would of course retain artistic control and would test the samples before authorising them . . . .

All Embroidering is Contained in Fandom?

Y'a know, there might be some fans around who would chip in to buy a shirt of stars for someone. I mean, it looks as if "Rolanni's Stars" and three book titles might be included in the base, and then at 0.60 for extra titles, it isn't all that expensive... Or we could each embroider a star, and mail them to someone who attaches them to a shirt?

What size? Long or short sleeve? Light or dark denim? List of book titles? Should be doable no problem.

Yep. I am a long way from rich but am happy to skip a trip to the shooting range. This seems far more important and enjoyable. Just finished my first reading of Mouse and Dragon.
