From the National Weather Service

Statement as of 2:35 AM EDT on September 02, 2010

... Heat advisory in effect from noon today to 6 PM EDT this
evening...

The National Weather Service in gray has issued a heat advisory...
which is in effect from noon today to 6 PM EDT this evening.

Temperatures will rise into the 90s across most of Maine and New
Hampshire this afternoon... with moderate to high humidity levels
helping to raise heat index values to near 100 degrees. A sea
breeze will likely cool temperatures down a bit near the coast
this afternoon... but inland locations will continue to see
temperatures rise into the mid to upper 90s this afternoon. The
high heat and humidity combined with the long duration of the
current heat wave will make conditions uncomfortable and
potentially dangerous especially in hot buildings without air
conditioning or proper ventilation.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

... Record high temperature set at Concord NH...

A record high temperature of 95 degrees was set at Concord NH today.
This breaks the old record of 93 set in 1953.

During the summer of 1988 -- the summer immediately preceding the autumn that we moved to Maine, we in the Baltimore region were burdened with more than two weeks where the temperature never went below 100F/38C. Steve and I were managing a storage facility at that point -- two acres of hot top laid down between rows of metal buildings. We would work the property before the sun was up, and took walks at 1 a.m. when the darkness gave the illusion of coolness. The office and our attached ranch house were, thank ghod air conditioned.

We came to Maine in October. I packed all my warmest clothes, Baltimore-style, into day luggage and Steve laughed at me.

Our first morning in Maine, we woke to a dusting of snow, and I knew I'd found home.

We were so thankful here this week when the temperature only got to 90. We have had 51 days of temps over 90 in the last 51 days with humidity around 79-80. It was such a relief to get some breeze from EARL - walking the dogs has been miserable. Out you go, hurry up and p-p and back inside. Even they don't want to spend any more time out than necessary. Thank Ghod for ac. I scurry from an air-conditioned house to an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned store..

At this time of year, it won't last. At this time of year, it's the last gasp, barring Indian Summer. It's been a long hot summer on the east coast.

It's been like that since the beginning of July here (Ontario, Canada). We're under a Level 2 heat and they're calling for some relief this weekend.

Relief in the form of thunderstorms. Well, at least there will be rain.

We've had a pretty warm summer here in Minnesota - lots of 90+ days. But a cold front blew through last night and it's supposed to be a bit cooler now. Of course on Saturday, I'm heading to Vermont for a week where the temps might not get much over 70 if weather.com is to be believed. I'm traveling with a friend from Atlanta, and she was planning to bring shorts - she's now hunting for long sleeved shirts.....

Stay in the AC if you have it, or put fans in strategic locations and think about snow!

In northern California we are just starting to see some summer weather - in September! It has been so cold and wet that most of the grapes have mildewed on the vine. Can't we share some of the extreme weather to make it bearable for everyone?? Hope that your arm is feeling better. I design curriculum and found physical therapy worked wonders for my arm when the whole thing decided not to work. Good luck! Kathy F.

Just hope Earl doesn't give you more cooling breeze than you want, with a shower to go with.

Earl, good news, bad news?

Well, it looks to me like you might see a lot of Earl this weekend
which should break your heat wave. Supposedly, Maryland will be
getting a 20 deg drop in temps. during Earl's drive-by. (Fly-by?)

Talk about come-Hell-or-high-water!

Maybe EARL will provide you with some relief from the heat on Saturday. Most of the current models have eastern Maine getting a small amount of the outer bands of possible tropical storm winds.

Keeping good thoughts for those living in the eastern Carolinas since they will be impacted today - closer and stronger.

Watching Gaston. So far it isn't showing any signs of taking that northward turn that Danielle, Earl, and Fiona did. So I may be dragging out MY hurricane supplies.

I feel the same way about occasional tornado sightings in the Bay Area. Earthquakes I can handle, tornados scare the holy bejeebers out of me.

I understand completely! We moved from the central valley of California to Washington state in June of 1987. For the first couple of weeks here we stayed at my sister's house while she was back east setting up a new home (military spouse)and it felt like we were going to freeze to death before we became acclimated; the difference being 100+ days and 90+ nights in California to 70-80+ degree days and 50 degree nights in Washington.

I've never regretted moving.

I hate... um... I intensely dislike hot weather

It's only the first couple of days of Spring in Melbourne (Australia) and it's already feeling warmer. I'm considering moving to Hobart - the closest I can get to Antarctica and still be in Australia.

Hope the wrist is on the improve. Phyllis

It has been miserable this August (and now on into Sept.) in central Texas. We've had 20-some-odd days of 100 plus heat; our high being a memorable 107. We are used to it and it is still awful, I can just imagine what it's like for you all who seldom hit the high 90s. My sympathies on your hot weather and hope it breaks soon! And hope your wrist is better!

Cooling Off Soon?

Good news. Cooling off soon. Bad news. Is the hurricane coming your way? Don't know if the storm bands will reach. Might be good to invest in some kind of portable air conditioner for every day use. Global warming?

The weather

Hey, maybe you could move to Victoria (Canada). The hottest we had this summer was a week of 30C heat, during which there was always a breeeze off the ocean. Mind you, it just rains all winter and rarely snows, which would be a big departure from Maine. We had one week of -10C weather and all the plants froze, normal winter weather is around 5C, thuough last winter it was 14C in Febuary. It must have been the only Winter Olympics where the participants had to worry about heat stroke!

Me, I did a doubletake to make sure I understood right that hitting the low 90s was cause for a heat advisory. It all depends on which direction you're reaching 90 from ... :-)
