I see by my morning email that Carousel Tides will have an audiobook edition, from Audible.com.

I’ll be talking to the narrator a little later to help her with the pronunciation of some of the odder words.

And now?

Coffee.

Don't forget to clue the narrator in on the difference between morning and mornin' :-)

That's a good point. And there *is* a difference.

The narrator writes from New York. The Full Maine, Pepperidge Fahm Man accent is too easy to do badly, which is why most people up here speak a modified form. I blame MTV.

Congratulations - that's great news. When an audiobook is made, how much input does an author get? And who selects the narrator? Very curious... insights welcomed.

Well...understand that this is only the second audiobook I've personally encountered. The first, we made a contract with Buzzy Multimedia; they selected Michael Shanks to read. We provided a list of pronunciations, but later read in an interview with Mr. Shanks that it never reached him.

The reason I know about the Carousel Tides audiobook is that the narrator wrote to me, asking if we could consult on pronunciations -- much love for the narrator!

Baen holds the audio rights for Carousel Tides, so they would have negotiated with Audible, who would have, in their turn, hired a narrator.

Congratulations on the Audio Book !!!

I can only imagine how much fun it must be to have to wrap your mouth around a bunch of words some author came up with it while having no clue as to pronunciation! What a gem that the narrator contacted you, shows this person is professional and respectful of the material.

Terrific news -- and hopefully another revenue stream. Smart narrator to have gone to the source for help!

Congrats and boy, were you busy!

Time to look at Carousel Tides, num, num, num

PS It turns out the Jr Associate in the law firm next door worked on
the old carousel in Ocean City, MD for at least a summer...though
it sounded like he worked in the off-season too, polishing brass
and re-painting. He happily took the Carousel Tides sampler off with
him.

Ooh...Hard work, but at the end of it -- a carousel!

He happily took the Carousel Tides sampler off with
him.

Hope he enjoys it!

I was just at Sherbourne Village today and saw the collection of carousel animals on dispaly there. Neat! Have you seen them? If not, I can send photos - eventually - whenever I can download my camera....

Mary

PS - I'll be watching for CT on Audible, but I hope you'll be able to give us a heads up when it's available.

I'm wondering if the people in Carosel Tides speak in that very old fashioned "down East" Maine accent. You know the old guy who always said "You can't get there from here"? It's a very hard accent to pull off I think, If there's some old geezer in the book I'm sure he would sound like that.

The heeterskyte talks Downeast(tm), but -- heeterskyte are sort of like that. I know folks up here who'll put on the Full Downeast for the tourists, but even they speak Modified Maine on an everyday basis. That's what I went for in dialog -- the rhythm and the feel.
