I have these proposals to finish up, so we can hopefully go to contract and have more work in future. Work in future is good, right?

Also, the day-job is in a slight mess because, in addition to everyday administrivia, I'm supervising three searches, which mostly has to do with opening envelopes, stamping dates, entering data and filing, so it sounds a lot of fancier than it is. One of the searches is at deadline, and, the tribe of wandering scholars being no different than, say, science fiction writers in matters of timing, almost everyone who is interested in the position has waited until the black, bitter end to submit their application.

Thursday, the number of applications on file doubled. Friday, which I took off in order to deal with a health issue, and whereby hangs a tale, was the deadline. The original plan -- to go in Saturday and enter data -- was vetoed by my faculty, who said that Monday was soon enough. However, the events of Friday have thrown a hex wrench into that -- I'll need to be gone for a couple hours, at least, in the middle of the day tomorrow -- so I thought I'd mosey in today and at least open envelopes, and sort things into data-entry-ready piles.

Except...my hands hurt. And, yanno, the proposals. And, opening envelopes hurts. Actually, you know what hurts? Stamping the date. Who'd've thought, right? And I hate the thought of all those applications stacked up, glowering. Sigh. Better part of valor probably really is to go in an hour early tomorrow, come back after the medical adventure, and work late. It'll put everything else back, and the key to day-job is to stay caught up, but -- argh.

So, what's everybody else doing today?

I hope your hands are considerably better tomorrow! And good luck with those proposals.

Me? I'm recovering from a migraine today. That and seeing if I have enough brain cells left to write. This is dubious, but the novel is giving me no peace.

I can usually manage to sketch in dialog when there are brain cells awol -- enough to get some peace from whatever happens to be in process at the time.

Hope your head feels better.

Thanks. The head is better thanks to riboflavin. I would never have guessed that 400mg/day would help, but it sure seems to.

Head's just now settled enough to write.

I once worked in an organization where the daily mail to be opened and stamped was measured in feet.

An opener like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-R-Electric-Letter-Opener/dp/B00006XY17/ref=sr_1_10

We also used a time clock like stamper:
http://www.amazon.com/Acroprint-ETC-Stamp-Digital-Clock/dp/B0006HUTOE/ref=sr_1_36

But even less expensive models of the stamper are probably a less likely purchase.

Yanno? The opener might actually be achievable, especially now that I've been given even! more! programs to support. Each of which will want to be doing searches.

The time-stamp -- I don't think I can talk that fast.

Oh dear. I knew someone like that in grad school - she said she deliberately waited until the day before or day of the deadline to submit applications (hers were mostly online) because she did not want to wait too long to hear back.

I thought she was insane, and I when I am job hunting I try to apply within a day or two of finding the posting (but sometimes, if I missed the posting somehow...). It sounds like there are more people like my former colleague than I thought.

Chores around the house, interspersed with chatting with friends online.

How about getting a grad student to stamp the entries for you? I bet they would jump at the chance, or at least be willing to help you out. If I were there I would stamp them for you. Seriously, ask for help! Or ask a faculty member who you have helped and appreciates all your efforts. You need to take care of yourself. Please. Kathy F. in CA

No, no, I have a very capable and diligent student worker. There will be plenty for her to do, in terms of filing, opening, and stamping -- and she will do it -- trust me. It's just that there's so much, and it all has to be done now, and Admin is committed to running the clerical and maintenance side of things Lean to the point of starvation.

Plus, yanno, Admin doesn't actually know what's involved, clerically, in a search, and persists in believing -- or at least persists in saying that they believe -- that these things wouldn't happen in a well-regulated office where tasks were planned out ahead of time.

A couple years ago, one of our searches got several hundred applications. Nobody had looked for that kind of response. I was crushed, yelled for help to Admin, and was told, "Gee, that's tough. Maybe you should've planned better." And, yes, I'm still bitter.

Today being Monday here, it's the day-job.

After which, I'm going to spend an evening hanging out with my brother and his wife, and probably watching the first episode of Sherlock, the new modern-dress Sherlock Holmes TV series. (Could be amazing, could be amazingly awful; the main reason either of us is giving it a chance is the Steven Moffat byline, which has previously been attached to some of our favourite TV ever.)
