Thanks to everyone for their suggestions of things to read; if life were otherwise, I'd do nothing but order in books and curl up on the sofa for the next four or five years. So much to choose from.

The filter in this case is the popular book holdings of Miller Library. I was very sorry that they haven't got Kerry Greenwood, which really plucked my "oh, they sound like the thing" chord.
