Clearly this thing I've been calling "a cold," and ignoring, is going to require more forthright action. Stupid cold. I really Don't. Have. Time. For. This. Cleaning out the cat fountain should not leave one breathless and dizzy. Also? I want the cotton balls out of my ears now.

Stupid cold.

*adds "call doctor" to tomorrow's to-do list*. Which, by the way, was already full.

Items left undone on yesterday's to-do list are going to have to suck it up. With the exception of the damned bookkeeping, which is going much slower than is completely reasonable, though I still have hopes of finishing it today. And, yanno, sitting quietly at my desk entering numbers into a spreadsheet, is almost as restful as reading a book on the couch, right?

Steve has found a mini-bag of mini-chip cookies and brought me half. Mmmm...chocolate chip cookies. He also promises salmon cakes for lunch. Honestly, I oughta marry this guy before somebody else beats me to it.

Mozart is asleep in the rocking chair here in my office. Hexapuma is overseeing the manufacture of salmon cakes. Scrabble is in the co-pilot's chair in Steve's office, making sure that Harrison Ford doesn't escape from the new cowboy movie and make it through the screen.

Um, right.

Back to the bookkeeping.

Cold/Doctor?

I love giving advice. I guess you could make sure that you don't have a flu. Since they do have antivirals one can take these days at the Doctor's for the flus. But if you just have a cold....what one definitely doesn't want to do, unless said cold has a secondary bacterial infection attached, is let the nice doctor give you an antibiotic which won't do any good and may increase your resistence to said antibiotic if you should get really sick in the future. Just saying.....Take lots of vitamin C. Drink orange juice. You might want to visit a health store and ask them what they have for colds. There's all kinds of stuff: vitamin C with Zinc lozenges, Umpka Cold Care, various Chinese remedies if the store is very fancy, etc. that work very well.

Around here the local folks feel if they leave the doctor's office without some kind of prescription they believe they haven't gotten their money's worth. Many drugs, however, are not to be trusted. Once a new drug goes first goes on the market, since it hasn't been tested on very many live humans, we all become guinea pigs. Right now the anti diabetes medicine Avandia is on trial suspected of killing a lot of people. Beware the drug companies. They don't care about you only about their shareholders.

And with that I will sign off having said quite enough I think for one night.

Gus hopes that you are feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear about the cold! As one frequently plagued by colds myself, here's what I've got:

1) You have a cold/flu virus, possibly exacerbated by allergies. Gonna have to wait it out. Waiting will be shortened and made less painful by application of fluids, vitamin C, and the miracle drug cocktail known as Tylenol Sinus Severe Congestion, containing the active ingredients of mucinex, robitussin, and sudafed, plus of course Tylenol. I recommend going for the real psuedoephedrine (behind the counter) rather than the non-meth-precursor phenylephrine, which as far as I can tell does nothing. And if allergies are a problem, it won't hurt to throw in an antihistamine.

2) You have a sinus infection. These will not go away without antibiotics from a doctor. Happily, antibiotics work very fast--I started feeling better in a matter of a few hours the last time I had a sinus infection.

3) You have something else, like strep throat, whooping cough, or pneumonia. Need to see a doctor for those too.

In all cases, lots of vitamin C and liquids are probably helpful. And if you have trouble falling asleep, you might try out Unisom (the tablets, not the gel caps). The actual drug is a mild anti-histamine which happens to make most people pretty drowsy, so the likelihood of undesirable drug interactions are pretty low. Also, it's cheap and available over the counter.

Anyway, hope you feel better speedily!
