I love these! The Opera Company of Philadelphia has done two that I know of, a Hallelujah Chorus in Macy's central court: (http://www.operaphila.org/backend/News/csNews.cgi?database=wings.db&command=viewone&id=85) and a "Flash Brindisi" from La Traviata at the Reading Terminal Market's food court: (http://www.youtube.com/user/operaphila#p/u/0/_zmwRitYO3w)
This doesn't seem to be on of the Knight Arts events (http://www.knightarts.org/random-acts-of-culture), but if it spreads, so much the better!
Which reminds me of the concert I went to last summer, a casual on-the-lawn thing at the local natural history museum, all Hawaiian music acts. But at one point a song was started on stage (and much of the music here can also be danced as hula) and some dude in the audience jumped up and started doing whatever the hula was to that piece. Just spontaneously. It was fabulous.
Thank you Google. This was a very carefully planned visit by Chorus Niagra of Welland Ontario to the food court at the Seaway Mall there. I saw a short clip on CNN. Thanks for the whole piece. No lip synching here. The 80 or so member chorus performed Handel's Halleluja Chorus as a Christmas present on Nov 13 for the mall shoppers supposed to look like one of those usually short flash mob type performances usually set up on social media. But not this time. This took a lot of planning in complete secrecy to pull off. The gal on the cell phone starting off the performance really was calling her sister in London the whole time. I thought the expression on the face of the little boy in the GAP sweatshirt was classic. I don't think he'd ever heard trained professional voices before. Very nice. Thanks. Reminds me of the Christmas concert in our little town. Usually there's the same piece where everyone attending gets to stand up and sing along.
This reminds me of the pick-up Hallelujah Chorus at Balticon, back when it was on Easter weekend. I only participated a few times but boy was it fun to surprise the hotel guests at midnight in the lobby.
Tremendously cool! I so would have joined in if I'd been there! Is it okay to copy-cat something this cool, I wonder? not to get on the interwebs, just to startle and delight people? I remember when the flash mob Do Re Mi first hit, that one still brings me to tears! Okay, this one did too....
