rolanni: (weather)
[personal profile] rolanni

Well, so.

It’s snowing here, but, then, it’s snowing everywhere.  The weatherbeans are calling fourteen inches on tomorrow’s storm. I guess there’s an inch, inch-and-a-half down now from today’s little effort; fluffy enough that I could sweep what was there away when I got home, and not have to worry about going back out, oh, now to do some more.

The day-job having no snow policy for staff  saving, “Come to work, tho’ Hell should bar the way,” I’ll be depending on Wiser Heads for tomorrow’s plan of action.  If the state police say that only essential personnel should risk their necks in the weather, I will be listening to the nice policeman.  And, no, so not essential personnel.

In the meantime, though I meant to get on with “Intelligent Design” — of which more later — this evening, instead I wound up balancing the checkbook, doing some odds and ends of SRM bookkeeping, and dealing with the mail.

Ah, the mail! Among other items of interest, today’s mail brought a 1099-Misc from Fictionwise for my sales through them last year, totaling a whopping $156.48.  Not going to Vegas on that.

Also of note was the arrival of the W2 from the day-job, which confirms that income from writing (we’re just counting my half, here, right?  That’s fair, innit?) outstripped income from Honest Labor last year.  This year, I fear there will be No Contest. I’ve already had to take so many days without pay, and with the upfront for three novels due in, not to mention the Odd and Unexpected bits of money that wander in from time to time — well.  It wouldn’t be sporting.

The highlight of the day’s mail, however, was — Mr. Timpani, if you would?

Ahhhh.

The highlight of today’s mail, I say, was the contract for “Intelligent Design.”  And now?

Now it can be told — “Intelligent Design” has been commissioned by Baen and will be appearing on the front page of the Baen website as a free! story! in the merry monthe of mid-July.  And, what’s even cooler, than, yanno, a free Liaden story?

There’s a free story up there right now, by Larry Correia, and there’ll be another one, come mid-February, by another Baen author.  So what you really want to do?  Is bookmark this page, so you won’t miss out on any great free stories from Baen authors.

I think that catches everybody up on the excitement here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory.  Everybody stay safe, stay warm, and be careful.

Congratulations on the contract. I'm looking forward to the story.

We have snow days rarely but Michigan State actually cancelled classes for tomorrow. Announcement went out at 4PM. So TPTB here gave us a snow day as well.

Aha! I thought that was probably where Intelligent Design was going. I mean, Toni says she's commissioned stories for the front page, and then these wonderful writers start talking about a story they are writing for someone -- it could have been a coincidence, but no, the two events were connected! Those hidden golden threads tying everything together...YEAH!

It was 38°C/104°F here yesterday. Those poor souls in Queensland are facing a category 5 cyclone, on top of all the flooding - here's a link, in case you want to be horrified by the size of the eye on that thing - http://www.bom.gov.au/products/national_radar_sat.loop.shtml

Snow? An inch or two would be nice. Anybody want to swap?

Stay safe out there.

Thanks for the link! Being from Florida, I have an "appreciation" for what information is actually being conveyed. I hope everyone in it's path has found shelter.

Excellent news on the story! Not so much on the snow. Good luck with that snow day.

Immediately above your post on my flist is one from Weathernerds that is, I think, germane. Snurched by a member from various channels.

"Wind. Snow. Ice. Blizzard conditions. 2,000 miles. 30 states. 100 million people. Worst storm in 50 years. State of emergency. Natural disaster. In Maine we call it... Wednesday :)"

Add in 50mph winds and you have Chicago. Schools here closed at 1:00pm today and are off tomorrow too. After a (brief) excursion out with the dog we both had to be de-iced on returning inside. Wish I was home in Maine. Keep warm and safe everyone!

I'm in Chicago too! One of the more impressive storms of my memory. Purple lightning is pretty startling reflecting off of all that snow.

Happy Dance! I can't wait for mid-July and a new Liaden story. And here in central Texas where it was 77 just 2 short days ago...it is 21 and windy but no snow. BRRRRR.
Stay warm! Hope you don't have to go to the day job tomorrow.

Speak for yourself - I'm in TX too and it is 13° on the way down to 5° b-r-r-r-r-r! with about 3" of mixed sleet and snow that nobody has the least idea how to drive on. And it's not going to get above freezing again till Saturday, so I guess it will last pretty well.

Hurray for the story, and for Toni and Baen!

I think Baen treats their readers with more respect than most publishers. They make it easy to find out if you like the author, maintain the free library and The Bar. They also reward you with a cd that includes many of the older titles and most of David Weber's books. Then they allow you to down load your ebooks in multiple formats. This is how I found the Liaden Universe.

I prefer Amazon's software for my pc but I travel with a Nook because email and online banking were available on it first and if it is heavier than most hardcover books, I am not carrying it. One husband and three sons have spoiled me for the rest of my life. The youngest shows up when it start snowing with his laundry which is the price we pay for all of the shoveling he does. I do not envy you the snow. Growing up in Iowa there was more than enough to shovel but it looks like much of the country is going to be shoveling out while most of Virgina will only see rain.

Knowing that you are a snow veteran helps – but please take it easy. We need more Liaden and you have had more than enough stress.

Congrats on the Baen free story. We all look forward to it.

It's 12 degrees here now. Much colder than normal. I'll be happy when it warms up a bit. It was 26 during the day today. It's usually 50 on a sunny day here.

Keep up the good work. Never mind about that "honest" thing. That must just be a rumor.

No snow in Florida either and, even better, we aren't getting any of that Arctic blast this time either. Thank you, we have had enough of freezing weather. My poor landscape, zone 9 plants just don't like a hard freeze.

Free Liaden Story...for which the authors get paid.
YAAAAYYYYYYY.

Sorry 'bout the snow.
Maryland has rain and 40-something deg F. Not looking fwd to
sunset when the piles of snowmelt will FREEZE. I was amused to learn this morning that the Football Gurus claim the Superbowl will Go On No Matter What. Man, they are just taunting Mother
Nature, aren't they?

My cousins in Queensland tell me the dam is a problem - they don't
dare let the sluices open considering there's still lots of
flooding. Talk about ouch.

Cousins? Queensland? A dam? I hope your cousins are safe above water level!

Yes, the cousins have mostly moved to homes on higher ground before all of this went down. There's debate about whether they should have managed the water above the Wivenhoe Dam before they had the floods AND then had to release the dam's spillway. Aus has an interesting and different approach to environmental management compared to the USA. I have yet to figure out how I feel about it.

I was thinking of Delgado yesterday while watching a video of a rock climber hiking this incredibly narrow path in Spain...bits of the pavement were just gone and you had to hang onto the wire as you inched along the metal support. I was thinking This. Cannot. Be. Safe. Where have I read about a place that did not allow unsafe conditions? Oh yeah. Delgado would not allow this.

My fault.. so sorry. I used to buy at Fictionwise a lot. That's actually where I first encountered the Liaden Universe. But for the last year or so, I've been buying my e-books from Baen Webscriptions.

On the other hand, once I read all the Lianden Universe Baen had there, I realized that these were all 'keepers', so I had to re-buy them in the one format that will survive computer death, and portable e-reader replacements - Paper! So I'm happily building up my collection (so happy about the ominbus editions!)
