Yesterday, I posted this link to Facebook - (Pull Quote: A far-reaching anti-choice bill includes a provision that could redefine rape. Date rape? Not rape anymore. Drugged? Nope. Show the GOP "no" means "no" - sign the petition demanding Congress oppose this horrible legislation.)

And I thought -- along with "Who the frack are these people?" -- "What in ghod's name is going on in their tiny minds?"

This morning's email brings the answer to Question the Second. (Pull Quotes: After a series of suspicious visits by individuals claiming to be sex traffickers, Planned Parenthood reported to Attorney General Eric Holder on what appeared to be an illegal undercover video operation targeting 12 of its clinics nationwide. It sought an FBI probe of those involved and any possible violations of interstate sex trafficking laws by the suspicious infiltrators.1

and...

Republicans have introduced H.R. 3, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," which already boasts 173 co-sponsors. The bill, among other things, would essentially mean the end of private insurance coverage for abortion. It also includes an outrageous provision that would restrict federally assisted abortion coverage only to victims of what the law defines as "forcible rape.

Some days? It's very, very hard not to hate the entire human race.

EDITED: Link to Planned Parenthood story. Thanks jhawk!

What is in the little bitty minds of congress? The bill considers rape of underage, drunk or drugged, and mentally incompetent not to be rape? The least we can do is add our names to the petition (already done yesterday).

Hope the snow isn't too high there. Hubby is out exercising the snow blower as I write. He says we only had about 6 inches so far today, northwest of Albany, NY. I haven't heard a vehicle except a snow plow all day.

This proposed legislation makes me want to punch someone in the head. Non-forcibly, of course.

WTF are their heads at?

"Politician" has become a description for an idiot with no morals. It's stuff like this that did it.

Does this remind anyone of the times when women either had (often botched) back alley abortions or could afford to go abroad?
Since Bush and Palin this country seems to be going through a lot of regression rather than progress.
I lived in Europe in the seventies and my German colleagues often found our Puritanical morals laughable.

I already pinged my congress critters...

In the interests of teasing out agendas, substitute the concept of "taking money from someone" for rape and see how much sense the proposed definitions make (no bruises, no broken bones- sorry, its not a robbery). I also strongly suspect that they wouldn't be very happy if the "non-rape" were done to their near and dear women folk.

As painful as it is to live with them, don't kill off the stooopid misguided ones - it will only select for the intelligent misguided members of the subspecies which are even more dangerous.

I recall reading that "forcible rape" wasn't well defined either - potentially creating a long series of interactions with the courts to discern the intent of the phrase.

Aja! Now yer talkin'

Because only 42% of the electorate bothered to vote in the mid terms, and because the great silent majority of the dems did not come out, the Republicans, who always vote, managed to get all their people into the House including lots of far right Tea Party People. We know this. So...what kind of legislation do you expect to be proposed? These people are out to get rid of abortion all together. Oh, and by the way, those crazies who have been secretly taping in Planned Parenthood are out to destroy that organization. Their head gal was on CNN this morning with their trumped up charges. Me a news junkie from the Great Blue City of New York. It's going to be a bumpy ride for the next two years. And, if all you dems don't get out and vote in 2012 ....it will just go on. And furthermore I hate that anyone and I mean anyone can buy a gun in this country. The only nation ahead of the US on gun ownership, a distant second, YEMEN!!Puleeze don't get me started. It's not necessary to hate the whole human race. These things are supposed to teach us patience. We're sure going to need it!

Bait to make you ignore the rest

There's some suspicion that the "redefining rape" section is basically the bait to attract attention away from another provision.

The Hyde amendment for decades has prevented federal money from being used to fund abortion, but another section of this bill apparently expands the definition of "federal money" to include such things as tax credits and deductions (e.g. what a company gets when they provide insurance coverage). Employee insurance plan cover abortion? You no longer get to deduct it as a business expense! Getting a tax rebate because you have medical coverage (as in "Obamacare")? That coverage better not include abortion coverage!

Some nice detailing of this here: http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/democrats-reach-for-shiny-object.html

Millions of years of evolution and we’re still this stupid. I agree with Alan though, it’s a good diversionary tactic.

Do you have to be a citizen of the US of A to sign that petition?
