Yes, yes: "Spam LiveJournal" was not on the to-do list.

An advertent reader tells me that the Locus Poll is now out. They note that eligible Lee & Miller, and Lee, novels are not listed, and neither were many of their favorite works of 2010. They also note that they made ample use of the write-in options.

The Locus Poll is a reader poll. Anyone can vote. Please only vote once. Mr. Kelly takes a dim, dim view of "ballot box stuffing." As he should. If you participate, please also be truthful about your gender. Mr. Kelly has in the past had a difficult time believing that women read SF in numbers.

YMMV. Admittedly, I'm a Locus subscriber and follow some European blogs--a few of the writers have published overseas and now breaking into the American market.

Locus also keeps a "published" list of books and magazines. If they don't see a copy, it's generally not listed, so I expect most publishers try to get them a copy of everything they're releasing.

In the SF novel list, I count five authors that I would consider 'up and coming' (1 I haven't heard of) and 8 or 9 in the fantasy novel list. Hmm, I didn't count Joe Hill, although he only has 2 books out. Okay, 10 in the fantasy list. Out of those, I haven't heard of half of them. Young adult: 4-5 up and coming, 2 I don't remember hearing about. Now for first novel, it's very disheartening that a sizable minority of the publishers are what I would call small press. All are up and coming. Four authors I've not heard of.

Out of the various novel lists, I've read 8 and have another 3-4 on the to-read shelves.

I don't generally read shorter fiction, so that's a whole different story!

Overall, I do think the Locus recommended lists lean towards the more 'literary' end of the genre which is definitely one reason why I haven't read (or want to read) many of the books on the lists!
