rolanni: (Dr. Teeth)

So, home from the Sleep Lab, where I did not rest well. The tech informs me that, yes, I do have sleep apnea, but! since it happens during REM sleep, and only during REM sleep -- which kind of Explains A Lot -- I'm very likely going to be scheduled for a rematch. This is all, of course, contingent upon the doctor's reading of the tapes.

Drove home in the dawning, radio on loud, singing along to that ageless romantic ballad from J. Geils, "Love Stinks," and, as the astute reader will deduce from the title of this post, Mr. Paul Simon's "Call Me Al."*

In the realm of Explaining A Lot, I was told that dish detergent is best for getting the contact cream out of one's hair, and it did work a treat -- prolly why the shampoos provided in such clinics as does are so harsh, as was reported by some of the F'list.

Anyhow, time to rustle up some oatmeal and another three or four cups of coffee, make a sammich and head out to the day-job.

See you on the flip side.

*I wonder how much thinking room inside my head is cluttered up with lyrics, odd bits of poetry, and clips like, In the ancient city of London, on a certain autumn day in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, a boy was born to a poor family of the name of Canty, who did not want him. On the same day another English child was born to a rich family of the name of Tudor, who did want him. All England wanted him too. ...and how much smarter I'd be if I could jettison it all.

Interesting about the apnea only happening in REM sleep. The times I "forget to breathe" are usually when I'm concentrating on something, the waking equivalent of REM.

I doubt that getting rid of the 'junk' memory would help, it's probably out of that you synthesise creative stuff. You never know which bits of 'junk' might make a connection and spark an idea. Even at worst the stuff can be entertaining ("now why did I suddenly remember THAT?").

Did you ever consider that those odd bits might be what makes you smarter?

I'm with the others on the odd bits in the basement being raw material. Although I have been known to ask my brain, in exasperation, why I can quote entire Ogden Nash poems I memorized more than 30 years ago ("I give you now Professor Twist..."), but can't remember where I left my car keys ten minutes ago.

I feel for you. I had sleep apnea for years (luckily able to be cured by surgery, which isn't common). The CPAP can be a pain, but you do get used to it after a short while. :)

I keep getting the recurring line "All I ever wanted was a little more respect from you" and I'm wondering if my subconscious is telling me something. Those pop-ups? They *are* what makes you smarter - IMHO the trick is *when* you apply them.

Glad the clinic went 'well'.

In my experience of creative insights their source, whatever that may be, must like my slush pile of useless facts and fancies, poems and pensées. Many a new insight has pulled together random items from my mental midden, and used them to build something rich and strange.

If I could somehow delete all those memory trances, my mind might compute faster. But would that creative source work as well? I have my doubts.

Since I don’t understand it, since its working okay as it is—I let sleeping muses lie.

Hope the coffee succeeded in keeping you as awake as the Day Job required you to be.

In tho lumber in the attic department, I ask the help of those assembled in identifying the earworm with which I have been afflicted the last several weeks. Perhaps if I knew where it came from I could STOP SINGING IT!

It takes all kinds of people to make up a world,
All kinds of people and things.
They crawl on the land,
They swim in the sea,
And they fly through the air on their wi-ings.

Bits and Pieces

I love my little bits of trivia. I think they help make up who I am. Had to look up that first sentence. I love Google. The first sentence is from the Prince and the Pauper. Loved the little poem from the commenter before me. My favorite sentence, of course, the first in Pride and Prejudice.

Good luck with the sleep. I don't like being tired at all.
