Thanks to everyone who weighed in on this important fashion question! With your encouragement and support, I'll have me a red replacement bag -- which will match the cover of my cellphone, so it's all good.

Answering a couple questions down in comments.

This is the bag under discussion, which is ripstop nylon as opposed to crinkle. Steve's similar world-traveling bag is crinkle nylon, and I don't like that fabric as well.

I didn't know Amazon had Baggallini bags! And I never thought to look for the company website (duh), but! eBags is having a heckuva sale, so -- ebags for the win.

The reasons I love this bag are many: (1) It doesn't drag on my bad shoulder, which is HUGE, especially given that (2) This bag carries not only the aforementioned cellphone, but The Leewit netbook, Paladin the Nook, my wallet, various necessary wires, medications, keys, business cards, pens, at least one pad of paper, cereal bar(s), a bottle of water, brushes, lightsaber, and the ever-popular etcetera.

Really, it's the Perfect Bag, and you should all rush off and buy one.

I too love Baggallini bags. My doctor recommended I carry a cross-body bag with a wide strap to ease my shoulder pain. The "Around Town Bagg" is now my everyday purse. http://www.ebags.com/product/baggallini/around-town-bagg-crinkle-nylon/113065?productid=1298468 Even though it is a crinkle nylon cat hair does not cling to it. Enjoy your new bag.

I gave up carrying anything

that required hand-carry and was very heavy after I gave myself tendonitis on the THIUMB side of my right hand. Cortisone shots hurt, even though it caused the inflammation to stop.

IF I have to carry my computer it is either in a neoprene sleeve that I can tuck under my arm or in a briefcase with a good shoulder strap and padding.

My purse is now very minimal and since I can't take it in to my work space, it is not that useful except on weekends. (I have a very cashier-liike day job and we can't take anything into the room that involves paper, bags, etc.

The plum one on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F3YMXS/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0001F32AO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=15S2S58NXK3KFFFB9RAN) is under $30, I note . . .

I love the messenger bag - and the cross strap. There us a but however. When going into the MFA in Boston last year I was stopped by a guard who told me I'd have to check it as they did not allow backpacks! I asked if he would be personally responsible for the security of my wallet, checkbook and cell phone! The compromise suggestion was that I carry it over one shoulder.
Idiots.
I now swivel it around so that it is over my stomach and that seems to pass muster.

Wait a minute. Across the body makes it a backpack, while one shoulder makes it a purse? Does this mean if I carry a rucksack by one strap (as I see people doing) that it magically becomes a purse? I wonder if they require babies being carried in back papoose carriers to be checked, also...

It does seem a mite arbitrary, doesn't it?

Yep. Arbitrary was among my many mutterings that day.
