So! I have a smartphone -- a Droid2 named...nothing, actually. I haven't ever really bonded with phones. I like this one much better than most because -- keyboard! And I can check email from it, and once when I got lost it helpfully guided me home -- no questions, no judging. Also, I can read books on it in a pinch.

In addition to the Droid, I rejoice in the possession of a Nook black-n-white, hight Paladin.

Both of these devices say that I can put music on them. I have a feeling that I will be wanting some music during the upcoming train trip across country, especially in those sections when we'll be doing the Coach thing.

Who can walk me through getting music from CD to -- by preference -- the Droid, or to Paladin?

Abundant Spanish Aunts!

Musin on a Nook

I have a Nook Color with music. As I remember (it's not in front of me right now) you treat is like a thumb drive and drag the music from your computer onto the Nook into the music folder. Hope this helps.

For the Nook, the music files must be MP3.

Connect the Nook to your computer. Copy your music into the My Music folder on the Nook. Or, if you have an SD card installed, you can put the music files there. That's how I have mine.

Just a FYI for Sharon on the part where you say "copy your music into the my music folder"...

Be aware that when you plug your nook into your computer using the USB cable, a new drive will show up in your My Computer folder as a removeable drive (note: if you have an SD card installed, then 2 new drives will show). You then need to navigate into that new drive and find the My Music folder as noted above.

You can put music on them, but playing the music might drain the battery life faster. I don't have experience with those particular devices, so maybe their battery life is longer than I think, or maybe you charge your battery so often that it wouldn't matter, but I thought I'd mention it as a potential drawback.

I use a dedicated MP3 player, the Sansa Fuze, when I want to listen to audiobooks, podcasts, etc.

Extra battery

In case you weren't aware, you can purchase a separate extra battery which can be used to power any of your USB devices. Very handy when sitting in a closed metal tube and you want to base your entertainment choice on the device, not remaining battery life. A versatile travelling companion where power is not universally available.

My brother, the self-styled God of the Techno-Geeks, adores his Droid (the HTC Incredible, IIRC), and reads all his ebooks on it, eschewing dedicated e-readers in favor of a single device. I, on the other hand, surf the back edge of the tech wave - know what my cellphone does? It makes phone calls!

Cellphones do that, too? Wow... :-)

On a related note, since the music question seems to be well in hand, have you looked at gmail and Goggle *? Goggle + is like a combination of Facebook and Twitter. More information can be had at www.plus.google.com. I would be glad to shoot you and Steve invites to Google +

since previous comments cover getting the mp3s to the devices ... i'll just cover the cd -> mp3 part ...

insert audio cd in cd drive

start windows media player
select 'rip' from the top menu
set format to mp3
click 'start rip'

Now the Live Journal has refused to post my brilliant comment. Let's try again. Testing.

I had to read an ad first. But...I am once again in awe of all the smart readers of Rolanni's blog. Good luck with the music on the train.

To get the music from the CD you can use Media Player on a PC or Itunes for a Mac. if you want a dedicated program to 'rip' the CD to MP3 you can search for that term in relation to MP3 and CD's. And will have a large selection of programs available ranging from free to costing something.
