Snow!

Very thin and very light, but -- snow! is falling! From the sky! There's maybe a whole inch on the ground, and I just heard the rumblerumbleROAR of a snowplow go up the road.

Stopped by the grocery store this morning and stocked up on cat food, Pepsi, and cheese. Across the street from the shopping center is the old cinema, which was bought by a local evangelical congregation and converted into a Freakin' Big Church. The purchase included the theater's roadside marquee, and they've been using it to post clever bits out of Quips for Preachers Weekly ("Son Shine Inside" and other bits of similar ilk) and notices of special church events. Today, the sign announces a "Prayer Shield," and instructs all who care to attend to "bring the name of their soldier" and the congregation will pray for their protection and safety.

This is, alas, where religion and I part ways. What can the good folken possibly say if -- as must happen -- one of the soldiers who is shielded by prayer gets blown up, crushed, shot, beheaded, or &c? "Oops"?

WBLM-FM, 102.9, aka The Blimp, has for the last three days been raising money for the Red Cross to aid the tsunami victims. The gag was called, "You pay, we play." Callers would request any song at all from the Blimp Archives, pledge twenty bucks to the Red Cross and the song would be played. Let me tell you, there has been some Very Weird Music coming out of the radio for the past few days. Frank Sinatra, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Billy Holliday... (at one point the morning DJ, who was really kinda getting into this, burst out, "This is SO COOL! Where else could I play Def Leopard and Tom Wait back to to back?") Anyhow, the station has, through the generosity of its listeners, raised on the order of $25,150 in three days (not too shabby, since their most optimistic projection was that they might be able to raise $10,000), and has had to stop taking donations until they catch up with the backlog of songs. They're now urging people to donate to the Red Cross directly.

I listen to KMTT-FM (The Mountain) at work a lot because...well, just because...and this week they're playing their entire library of songs in alphabetical order. This morning I got to hear Dylan's version of "All Along the Watchtower," followed by Hendrix's version, followed by a long live version by someone else (unfortunately, I had to leave the environs of my radio at that point). Coulda been Indigo Girls, as they used to do the song in concert.
