Edited to Add: Problem solved! Thanks everyone!
The following, from a frequent anonymous commenter, arrives in email. I know that there are ways to comment to LiveJournal from other accounts -- like facebook -- but I have no idea how that works. For those coming in late, anonymous commenting has been turned off because Eagles Over the Kennebec is under a continuing onslaught of spam handbags.

The plea:
I'm willing to sign up for a LiveJournal account if necessary (I already have a WordPress one, if that will work) but when I go to "comment" it shows only "- this user has disabled anonymous posting." and doesn't let me switch the "anonymous" choice back to the list of ways to post (I remember Google was on there, as was LiveJournal).
Do you know how I would do that, and can I use a WordPress login or do I need to get a LiveJournal account?

Date: 2012-02-09 05:34 pm (UTC)When you go to the LiveJournal "leave a comment page", just to the right of where it says "anonymous" should be a black icon of a head with a grey down arrow next to it. If you don't see that arrow, try a forced reload of the page (most browsers, this is hold the shift key while clicking on the reload button/icon).
Click on the down arrow and select "open ID". A window will appear where you can put your WordPress URL, which should start the authentication process. It's generally pretty clear from there. If you are logged in to WordPress before you start, it may go faster (that's how I do dreamwidth).

Date: 2012-02-09 07:55 pm (UTC)I could click on the down arrow next to the little head, but it was essentially grayed out as far as offering me choices of how to log in. Annoyingly, clicking it refreshed the display with a note in red: "this user has disabled anonymous posting."
I tried refreshing the screen, clearing out my cache and cookies, etc. and nothing worked. So I've created a basic LJ profile, and now it recognizes me. Hooray for all of you, because I wouldn't have figured it out myself!
