Edited to AddProblem solved!  Thanks everyone!

The following, from a frequent anonymous commenter, arrives in email.  I know that there are ways to comment to LiveJournal from other accounts -- like facebook -- but I have no idea how that works.  For those coming in late, anonymous commenting has been turned off because Eagles Over the Kennebec is under a continuing onslaught of spam handbags.

The plea:

I'm willing to sign up for a LiveJournal account if necessary (I already have a WordPress one, if that will work) but when I go to "comment" it shows only "- this user has disabled anonymous posting." and doesn't let me switch the "anonymous" choice back to the list of ways to post (I remember Google was on there, as was LiveJournal).
Do you know how I would do that, and can I use a WordPress login or do I need to get a LiveJournal account?

I _think_ that the commenter can use their Wordpress account as an OpenID to log into LJ (I know at one point I used my LJ as an OpenID to log into Dreamwidth & comment there on various accounts). From the account drop-down options here on LJ, it looks like you could use a Facebook, Twitter, or Google account to log in as well. It would at least avoid the "anonymous" option. If you can't change from the comment page, it may help to go to the main LJ page, and try logging in there.

Trying from my Google account

Looks like that worked, and LJ did give me the drop-down option. If that's not working, try foing to Livejournal.com, log in there with your choice of ID, then come back to rolanni.livejournal.com to commentonce logged in.

Yeah. LJ does sometimes make thongs difficult, doesn't it? :/

Thanks, this is what I did and once I created/verified/logged in to my shiny new LiveJournal account, I was able to post!

At the top of the form, it says From: [an icon] Anonymous. If you click the icon which is a face with a question mark head and a down arrow, you should be able to choose from the following types of accounts:
LiveJournal
Facebook
Twitter
OpenId
Google
Mail.ru
Vkontakte

Hope this helps

I believe WordPress supports Open ID. So you should be able to use it on LiveJournal. I use my LiveJournal ID on dreamwidth via Open ID.

When you go to the LiveJournal "leave a comment page", just to the right of where it says "anonymous" should be a black icon of a head with a grey down arrow next to it. If you don't see that arrow, try a forced reload of the page (most browsers, this is hold the shift key while clicking on the reload button/icon).

Click on the down arrow and select "open ID". A window will appear where you can put your WordPress URL, which should start the authentication process. It's generally pretty clear from there. If you are logged in to WordPress before you start, it may go faster (that's how I do dreamwidth).

I'm mostly just curious if this will work! I am comment challenged and am trying to work through it!

I'm in! Thanks for the help

Thanks, everybody, for your suggestions!

I could click on the down arrow next to the little head, but it was essentially grayed out as far as offering me choices of how to log in. Annoyingly, clicking it refreshed the display with a note in red: "this user has disabled anonymous posting."

I tried refreshing the screen, clearing out my cache and cookies, etc. and nothing worked. So I've created a basic LJ profile, and now it recognizes me. Hooray for all of you, because I wouldn't have figured it out myself!

Be aware, that Live Journal occasionally tries to delete accounts of people who do not post, whether they comment or not. But they send an email first and it's easy to tell them to keep your account.
