Weird Word List: Known Volunteers, First Task

The first thing we need to know is what resources are at hand. Both John and Elizabeth have lists, or will have lists? Can I ask the two of you to talk and sort out who has what, and split up any remaining sorting work between you?

While the Automagicians converse, may I hear from the Wranglers which book(s) they would like to Wrangle? We have (potentially) seven Wranglers and at least 8, and possibly 10, titles to sort. I feel that the Crystal books will be among those titles, and they do, I think, present a special challenge. Capprichio, is it possible that you could step up as Wrangler for those, rather than Harvester?

I will be away from the computer tomorrow, Saturday, but ought to be back on Sunday.

Which books and which versions?

Do you want your automagicians to process the short story collections? I have both compilations (e.g. Crystal Variation) and the original books: do you want me to do the originals, the older versions, or both (and leave it up to the respective Wranglers)?

It would save effort for the wranglers if someone went over a net list of everything and eliminated false positives. I did one pass-through for that, and I can do more, but I'd like to ask if I simply eliminate non-standard English words which are obvious compounds (TempSubChair, autodoc, clanmate, cleanbot, multigun, musicart)? (Or I could email the list of possibilities to someone else if the authors want to select an eliminator or do that themselves.)

Wrangling

Since there are more books then wranglers, I am stepping up to the front lines. My favorite books are, in fact, the Crystal Duology. But as Sharon has fingered Capprichio for the task, I'll graciously step aside, unless (s)he declines. If that happens, I call dibbs!

Remove my provisional status, and I can do Scout's Progress. Question: In this context are Delm Korval, Lady yos'Galen, etc. considered names which need to be treated separately? And if there is a name like "Chi yos'Phelium, Delm Korval", is the whole thing to be treated as a name, or just the name part?

You will have lists on some kind of software. This is beyond me. then the lists go into some kind of data bases...also above my understanding. BUT I ask again ....for up coming audio books perhaps...what is the correct pronunciation of the words?

I've always wondered.... What is the correct pronunciation of "Daav" for example? And then on down the lists.

There are at least two different accents of Liaden also. The way Daav speaks and the way that Aelliana speaks since they come from two different cities. Does that make any difference? Then there's high port, low port, mid port. There most certainly are different dialects of Liaden on different parts of their home planet and on different planets. Are you going to pick one version of Liaden for pronunciation? Just asking.

A dialect of English would be, for example, (sorry if you know all this already) what is spoken by African Americans in the inner city. I believe it's called Eubonics. The grammar and the vocabulary are a bit different from standard English. I was once asked by a Spaniard where standard English is spoken. I said, "On the Radio and on TV" which was received with amusement. In England where region, neighborhood and class are more pronounced there are lots of accents and lots of dialects. Not so much in the US. I have a terrible time even understanding the speach of the Gorbals in Glasgow. I knew a person who had relatives visiting from there. There a guy who spoke very fast. I couldn't understand him at all even though he was speaking English. The other relatives had realized that they were in a foreign country and had slowed way down and pronounced more clearly. But not him.

I had a terrible time understanding Freddie in "Cotillion" as well because he used so much slang of the time that I dispaired at first about knowing what the ...he was talking about. I caught on better as the book went on.

Not that there's any reason you should wrangle the words unless you want to, but for my part I'm planning on giving wranglers a simple text file (or several, if they want the same information in different formats) to work from.

Considering that the terran assassin in Mouse and Dragon gleefully called him 'David', I would assume it's a more-or-less "dave" sound, perhaps with a drawn-out long 'a'.

For some reason, I've always assumed that the middle part of Daav is sounded like the a in "at", thus making Daav sound like the first part of davenport. Perhaps a shade softer. I'll be watching for the "official" sound!

I will accept a word list from from any books that Sharon assigns me. What format would you like them back in? I use Open Office for many things, I also use MySql. I could try to set up a Web Page with access to MySql for viewing the finished data. If others are also able to do XHTML, PHP and MySql I am willing to work with them to make a nice whole package. I do not have tons of experience with PHP.

Split the Crystal Duology

If you want to start with Crystal Soldier, I'll start with Crystal Dragon. My recollection is that there are lots of unusual words in that one. (Break my heart to read it again. :) I've probably read it 4 or 5 times at least. I Dare more than that.)
I still have a question. What is the format you want the returned information in? God bless the real data base folk out there. How about if I put it in an excel file since that seems to import and export to a lot of data bases? And the real questions is, Sharon, are we doing page numbers from the dead tree format or an electronic format? I need electronic copies of the Crystal Duology anyway so am perfectly pleased to buy yet another copy of your books. :)

Available data: the "misspelled" word, the surrounding paragraph, the paragraph number, the word number, and a guess at the chapter. I don't have the page numbers available, but Sharon has said in clarification to another wrangler that she doesn't need the page numbers so long as the words are in the list they're found in the text.

I'm going to send plain text only, but I can send tab-delineated if you want to import it into something.

Both books are available individually from Baen ebooks.
However, as a wrangler, we aren't collecting the words. But still, it's far easier to search for suspicious words/spellings in an e-copy.
