When writers have a Better Idea, they get the right words. Which is unrelated to quantity, despite the current "mandatory doorstop" phase that SF publishing is going through.

I will (with trembling and trepidation) suggest that the perfect word in the perfect place -- especially in dialogue -- is the great strength of your writing. Less can be more, at least for me.
