As reported elsewhere, the amusement park is closed for the season.

Ah, well.

Yesterday, around 11 a.m., Every Motorcycle in Nearest New England hit town with a roar and a snarl, and behold! the town began to act as if it was summer.  Bars and restaurants that had been sealed up tight all week, were open, lights on, music pouring out of open windows, bikes and cars were doing the vanity cruise up and down the hill, and around the Fountain Circle.  Bathers appeared on the beach above the Pier, though not so much below.  The Pier threw the switch, and really bad, live, rock music wafted over the beach.

In other news, I clocked 3.5 miles yesterday, and 2,550 words, so that.

I see in the latest issue of the Courier, by the way, that the local animal rights folks are still trying to keep the Wormwood Cats in place.  The town appears to be allowing itself to be bullied by the man from Away, however, so still not sure how all that's going to play out.  The rights folks do mention that:  working harbor + no cats = rats.  Perhaps the gentleman from Away has never seen a harbor rat.

I note that Moonrise Kingdom is not showing in any theater within the sound of my voice, which is kind of a shame.  I had wanted to see that. *makes note in Netflix*.  Sigh.  At this rate, I'm gonna have to take off two weeks to catch up all the movies in my queue.

Today's activities include grocery shopping, minor housekeeping chores, a walk on the beach to see how that Surge Warning looks up close and personal (yes, I'll be careful; I won't go in the water; and I will be very, very respectful of waves), and more with the writing.

Hope everybody's having a fun and/or relaxing weekend.

Who knew Maine had its own version of the Friday the 13th Port Dover, Ontario bike-in :)

I'm spending the day doing the laundry from Worldcon and replenishing the fresh fruit and vegetables I used up before I went.

You make it sound like the town is a small exotic corner of heaven: a hideout for those saints who don't like grandness.

The photo of the church, however, brought up a thought, that the subject of the church is, indeed, not covered in Carousel Tides. Nor in the Child. Even if trenvay are indifferent to religion, as they have every reason to be - the religion cannot be indifferent to them...

Or is it?

Perhaps someone should explain, both to the (crazy) man from Away and to the local authorities the enourmously greater disadvantages of rats as opposed to cats?
*thinks very bad thoughts about both man from Away and local authorities*

The thing I don't get...I mean, yes, the man from Away has demonstrated that he doesn't give a flying fig what his neighbors think. But what on earth can he believe his life in town is going to be like from now on? Camp Ellis isn't that big...

Not sure who the man from Away is. Not sure who the Wormwood Cats are. But guessing at the Cats anyway ....would be feral (wild and stray, homeless) cats. Assuming that the animal welfare people over there know about Trap, Neuter, and Release programs for feral cats whereby they are fixed but then can live where they always have but not multiply out of control. Contact Alley Cat Allies for suggestions if'n anyone is asking. They are the experts on such.

No I've never seen a harbor rat. I assume the are stowaways on various ships and are very big. I think most people would agree that cats are better than rats.

The sad part is that the Wormwood Cats have been a stable feral colony for about 20 years. The locals do the trap, neuter, and release; every cat gets it rabies shot; they're respected, working citizens of the town, people know them, and watch out for them...

They're called the Wormwood Cats because they live around the Wormwood Restaurant at Camp Ellis. If you follow Ed's link, above, there's the story of the controversy from the Courier.

Short form: the man from Away says the cats are defecating on his lawn and putting his health and the health of his family in peril and he wants the dern things out of town (one gathers he would prefer that they were put down, but moved out will do). He is apparently a man who is accustomed to getting his way, and the Town of Saco, to which Camp Ellis looks, is apparently tired of being browbeaten on the topic of a few dozen cats, so it caved and said it would move the colony, despite warnings from the local Animal Rights and Feral Cat groups that this was unlikely to work; the cats would come back; more cats -- perhaps less healthy -- would eventually fill the void, and in the meantime, working harbor = rats. Which would be an actual threat to the health of his family.

None of this moves the man from Away: the cats must go. Personally, I hope he has nightmares for the rest of his life. But that's just me.

More great photos. Thanks. Don't suppose you can show us the Wormwood Cats?

I'd hate to try. I think they're hiding from the Saco Animal Control Officer, the poor guy tasked with trapping them and taking them away.

Good search skills.

I'm sorry to be obscure, the comment was mostly for local folk who were aware of the controversy, but I should've explained better, for those who are non-local and still interested.
