I had them noted as:
Ancestors: the two Crystal books.
Parents: all the books associated with Dav's generation: like Mouse and Dragon
Present Main: Val Con's group of stories including and starting with Conflict of Honours and ending with Necessity's Child (so far).
Present Sub: Theo's stories
Present Allies: Balance of Trade

I've been considering starting a new thread in my list starting with Necessity's Child and calling it Present Surebleak or Children but haven't, yet.

Because it was said within my hearing that Trade Secret begins to tie in four of the main five Liaden story threads and I thought, "Really? I wonder what those threads are, exactly." This is one of the reasons I like to interact with our readers; they/you must think about our work differently than we do -- and it's interesting to know what/why you/they think as they/you do.

Here are what i think of as the five main threads Of the story set in current time

1.development of Surebleak with Korval(a stew pot of Liadens and Terrans and scouts)
2. Theo Waitley and Bechimo's journey(what the heck will they do?)
3. Daav and Aeliana adventures and achieving balance with Kamele.
4. Korval's trading with the galaxy at large
5. The elimination of Department of the interior and restoration of agents of change(Learn how to fix what's broken)

* the unpalatable fact that Liadan's and Terran's have a common ancestor (Anne's linguistic work, and - to some extent at least - the Yxtang).

I've only ever thought of it as three threads:

The ancestors and the exodus

Balance of Trade, Arin and the befores

The current story line, which includes all the others since generation Daav and Er Thom

I tend to lean toward the three threads - with extras:

The Crystal books - where it began and the escape to Liad and the current universe.

Balance of Trade, Trade Secrets, - "previously" in the current universe

The Current Universe story line - the story arc starting with Agent of Change and going (so far) to Dragon Ship with extras which are:
- the space regencies (recent past) Local Custom, Scout's Progress, Mouse and Dragon
- the Theo coming of age books that merge into the end of I Dare in the Agent of Change sequence
- Necessity's Child

Hmm, these are more themes than threads and the more I think about it the more I think of, but:

- Duty and necessity.
- Korval and their luck
- Uncle and the Befores and Bechimo
- Department of the Interior
- The tree and it's meddling

My grouping tends to be internal chronology.

Crystal duology
Trade books
The "previous" generation - Daav, Er Thom, etc.
Theo sequence - including the two "ship" books
Agent of Change to Necessity's Child - I see Conflict of Honors as the prologue to this,

This is partially because I have a colour-coded (yes, I can go too far in these things) timeline of books and events in the official "List of Books I Own" - which not only has the novels, but also the short stories and as many "events" as the authors have listed or what I have been able to set based on information given in the works. Not only am I hopelessly visual when it comes to remembering things, but also dreadfully linear.

However, even having only read the sample chapters I can see how the themes of "what do you do when you learn something about your past that throws everything you thought you knew into disarray", "Melant'i - honour or petulance?", "what does Balance consist in?" and "personal responsibility vs. the clan". which I have encountered is a myriad of ways across the canon, are beginning to play out for Jethri and which, I assume, will continue for the rest of the work.
