Well I wrecked the El Camino, and it woulda been DWI
Sunday, March 2nd, 2014 10:54 amSo this morning, with a snap! heard through the house, Jack the Giant Killer, the venerable Windows XP desktop, left this mortal realm. I'm hoping this is a temporary death and that Jack can be revived with the installation of a new power supply, and that the neutrinos escaping from the explosion of what is now certainly the Former Power Supply didn't nuke the hard drive.
It would be. . .mildly inconvenient if I lost the hard drive, most of the important stuff is backed up. And the Book is Safe -- I apologize to the writers reading here, I should have said that first.
If Jack is truly lost to us, I'll be hooking Ox up to the big screen and the Funny Looking Keyboard. I do NOT have the budget for a new desktop this year. Gah.
For now, I'm writing on the Mencken Table via Ox, from which I will sporadically be available to the internets.
In the meantime, having done the day's murder, I have chores to do.
Everybody stay safe.

Date: 2014-03-03 12:30 am (UTC)On the bright side, the hard disk should be able to be removed and temporarily installed elsewhere to allow recovery, should the need arise.
I've been running an external hard drive called "My Passport" for the last year and backing up to it, so was able to transfer my files by simply plugging the Passport into my new computer and selecting the files I wanted to transfer (I made a pass of the old machine to do file specific saves, as opposed to the "save everything", prior to final shut-down so I could locate them easily by name).
I suspect you are more current than I with your various machines, so will simply wish you well on whatever path you pursue.
One other thought. Two new computers (one for my husband) were not in our budget either. However, both our bank and our credit union have special loans available to pay off credit card debt. So we charged both machines onto a credit card and got a 15 month loan from Wells Fargo, interest free for the first 6 months, and something nominal like 7 % APR for the next 9 months. We are able to spread the payments out to repay within this time period with much less pain.

Date: 2014-03-03 01:10 am (UTC)Wells Fargo offered a zero percent interest loan for 15 months, but requires a 3% up-front fee. If you are not paid off after 15 months, it goes to 18%. Still a good deal.
Schools Credit Union offers a 15 month loan, interest rate 2% for the first 6 months, then goes to 8 %. Goes up quite a bit after 15 months, so the secret is to pay it off in 15 months.
Both of these were available in January to pay off a specific credit card. I'm in California. Hope this helps someone.
