...are only slightly exaggerated.

The cold, it got worse, necessitating time off from work, to the delight of the cats, who are both in favor of Rolanni coming home in the middle of the day to have a looooonnnnnggggg nap. Hopefully, I'm through the worst of the disease now and will see swift improvement from now on.

Of course, I said that yesterday...

My office is on the second floor of the campus library. It's sort of like a loft office, reachable by an open-plan staircase that reminds me of my days living in an ...interesting apartment in a converted theater in downtown Baltimore. The ceilings being high, it's quite a walk from the sidewalk level to the second floor, and I invariably stop three-quarters of the way up for a breather. Which is humiliating. My one consolation is that I will soon have Thews of Iron.

One takes one's consolations where one finds them, I suppose.

Hope y'all have been having a tolerable week, wherever you are...
rolanni: (walk in the snow)
Arrived at work amidst gentle snow; wandered around a bit before I located the building that HR lives in, filled out papers, walked in the snow over to new digs and made myself known to those folks who happened to be about. Spent the morning on a tour of the increasingly snow-covered campus, meeting many pleasant people whose names I will no doubt need to be reminded of again, and finding out that various necessary things couldn't happen because I Wasn't in the System Yet. At noon, conditions were bad enough to justify going home, so I called [livejournal.com profile] kinzel, who heroically drove across the river to retrieve me.

At home, we shared lunch, after which [livejournal.com profile] kinzel unfortunately had to deal with a Computer Event. I retired to my office to fill out even more job-related forms (remember how computers were going to make us free of the tyranny of paper?), then did some writing, finished reading Carnival by [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, and scrubbled cat bellies.

It is not, as I write this, snowing. The weatherbeans are still promising ice on the overnight, which I could do without, thanks. Tomorrow is forecast to be partly cloudy and colder than it has been, but not out of line for the season.

And so it goes.

There's a life-size marble lion on the ground floor of the building I work in. At first, I thought he was sleeping. Then I saw the spear broken off in his side...

Oh. Right. Gotta be on the phones RSN. Coffee is definitely in order.

It rained yesterday and most of the snow is gone, dernit. I really had hoped that we had the base cover for the winter now.

Matters at the cousin's place of business are heating up considerably, and I'm starting to get tired of saying my own name. 'nother three days this week, then two whole days off in a row. I can do this.

Fledgling is now funded almost to the end of Chapter Seven. That's just...amazing.

Hope everyone's Rush Toward Potlach is going smoothly and that y'all are getting enough sleep.

...coffee...

Thursday?

Among the many side effects of working the Season at my cousin Bean's is the Ritual Disarray of The Calendar. Despite that much of what I do at work is date driven, it's difficult to remember what day it is when the schedule has one working Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, Monday, &c. The best one can hope for is to achieve a rhythm: Work-off-off. Work-Off. Work-Off-off. Work... Which is all very well and good for Work's purposes, but plays utter havoc with the rest of life's Scheduled Events.

In other news, Google Translate still lacks a Liaden-English/English-Liaden function, though dea'Gauss has written to them repeatedly on this topic. I suppose the next step is sending Nelirikk up to talk with them. This does give one pause, but, really, better Nelirikk than Val Con, I think...

Today's to-do list includes filling out the Boskone questionnaire, answering at least some of my seriously backlogged email, filling SRM orders. Oh, and there's some writing to be done in there, somewhere.

Guess I'd better get on the stick...

ETA: LJ spellcheck doesn't recognize Liaden. Or Nelirikk -- which is just as well, really...

Damn, I'm good

Some of the on-going amusement of my life is provided by a small, but erratic gift of precognition.

For instance, today, I'm getting ready for the first day on the new job. I have showered. I have donned work clothes. I am on my way down the hall to the kitchen to make the Sacrificial Cheese Sandwich to take with. I'm maybe three steps away from the kitchen, in fact, when the phone rings.

[livejournal.com profile] kinzel is nearer and heads for the phone stand. (Actually, it's not a phone stand, it's a microwave cart with an extra shelf, which we use as a phone stand. The microwave is on top of the cart, and it's a blessing, yes it is, that we're both tall.)

"It's my boss," I say from the hallway. "They don't need me today."

[livejournal.com profile] kinzel laughs and picks up the phone. I hear, "May I tell her who's calling?" as I step into the kitchen.

"Just a moment," [livejournal.com profile] kinzel says, and holds the phone out to me.

"It's your boss," he says.

And, yup, they don't need me today.

Hey, at least I hadn't made the sandwich yet.
