Loot from the Trade Show
Thursday, June 15th, 2006 05:46 pmThe Trade Show at Lewiston was downright impressive. It was held at the Colisee, the largest venue thereabouts and the floor was packed. It was like unto the BEA in that none of the exhibitors could be restrained from shoving things into the hands of passersby. In this way, Rolanni collected an Exceptionally Nice yo-yo from WGME, Channel 13(with which she proceeded to entertain The Masses. What? Can't everybody walk, talk, and yo-yo at the same time?), fifty kazillion pens, manymany pads of paper, most mounted on magnets, a free night's stay at an oceanfront hotel, an unidentified plant, and the World's Coolest Poker Chip. Honestly, I'm thinking SRM ought to commission a mess of Tree-and-Dragon poker chips to hand out at NASFiC next year -- trust me, these things are seriously satisfying in the hand.
Lest you think all was frivolity and fun, we also attended a seminar on disaster planning, which was interesting, informative, and scary. Lots of things to think about, in terms of SRM and also in terms of our writing career. I've thought of what, myghod, would we do if one of us fell Seriously Ill, but without actually thinking about it, if you know what I mean. Obviously, we ought not continue in that vein. Being a grownup sucks.
We made some potentially useful contacts, including an introduction to a co-op of consultants/freelancers which it would certainly benefit SRM to join. Most of the members are based in Lewiston-Auburn and down south to Portland, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, since in Maine south is where the money is. For some value of money.
Also spoke to an Arts Council lady who is actually interested in having writers in her school program, and managed to talk to one of the acquiring librarians for the Lewiston Public Library, pressing both an SRM catalog into her hands, and information about our novels.
So, in all, a satisfying and useful day. Now, I'm going to go put my feet up -- they earned it.
